Man stabbed to death during robbery

Johannesburg - A man was murdered and his wife wounded during a robbery in their home in Middelburg, Mpumalanga police said on Wednesday.

Sergeant Gerald Sedibe said Jan and Marietjie du Toit were both stabbed by two men in their home around 16:00 on Tuesday.

The men forced open the doors to the couple's home and attacked them. Jan was declared dead on the scene and Marietjie was taken to hospital for treatment.

Sedibe said it had not been confirmed if anything was stolen from the couple's home.

The Democratic Alliance in Mpumalanga has condemned the killing and called on provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thulani Ntobela to set up a crime-fighting plan.

"The DA is highly concerned over the attack and the escalating criminal behaviour in our province.

"Criminals are running riot, despite police efforts, terrorising residents across the province with the confidence that the chances of being caught are relatively limited," Mpumalanga DA MPL Anthony Benadie said.

Benadie said visible policing and anti-crime initiatives were insufficient and ineffective, and an issue that should be addressed immediately.

No one has been arrested.

Police were investigating a case of murder and house robbery.
