Johannesburg - A man was stabbed to death in the Combizza informal settlement near Daveyton on the East Rand shortly after midnight, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

The man, in his 20s, was killed during an argument with a group of men he had spent new year's eve with, Captain Alfred Makana said.

He ran away after he was stabbed, but later collapsed and died.

"Three men had visited him and his friends. Later the two groups had an argument and one of the men in the rival group stabbed him."

Makana said the Mozambican man who allegedly stabbed him fled and police were searching for him. Police knew his identity.

"We are afraid that he might cross the border."
