Man tries to smuggle R20m in diamonds

2012-11-14 09:48

Johannesburg - A Lebanese man was arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle diamonds worth about R20m out of OR Tambo International Airport, the Hawks said on Wednesday.

Police, responding to a tip-off, arrested the 25-year-old on a plane about to leave for Dubai on Tuesday night, Captain Paul Ramaloko said.

"We recovered 220 pieces of diamonds which he had swallowed shortly after his arrest."

In March another Lebanese man, aged 27, was arrested at the airport and diamonds worth R15m were recovered. Ramaloko said police believed the two were part of a diamond-smuggling syndicate.

He would appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Investigations were continuing.

Lambaste me if you want to cause I know this is a stupid question... But where do they get these diamonds from?

      JohhnyBGood - 2012-11-14 10:09

Was wondering the same thing. Maybe from the Zim mines up north. Mugababa and his cronies are enriching themselves from those mines.

      foc.us.10004 - 2012-11-14 10:21

@michael there are lots of diamond diggers that has valid licenses but do not want to sell through formal channels, due to pricing; taxes; commissions; etc. so they sell to guys like these for cash at normally much lower prices .... there are 100's of diggers in North West and Northern Cape...

Have a look at artisanal miners in DRC or Zimbabwe, the conditions they work in and what they get paid. SA miners are among the BEST paid in Africa

  • Genesistt - 2012-11-14 11:13

Were the diamonds cut or uncut? Just curious.

  • MrDinwiddie - 2012-11-14 11:15

How big r these diamonds to be worth so much? If the 220 pieces r worth R20m the he'd have paid around R90k for just 1. That's no small diamond

  • khanyisile.motaung - 2012-11-14 11:31

      foc.us.10004 - 2012-11-14 13:05

He would be a nervous wreck until he clears customs and check-points at the arrivals side of his destination ... only THEN can he relax and start counting the profits
