Cape Town - Four months after the murder of a pair of police officers killed by fleeing armed robbers, the Port Shepstone Organised Crime Unit has identified a man who may be able to shed light on the incident.

Police are searching for Andile Khohla, who is also wanted for an attempted murder and murder case which took place in Mqanduli in the Eastern Cape in December 2003.

Spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane in a statement said police believe Khohla can assist in the investigation into the deaths of constables Mpendulo Welcome Jaca, 37, and Zamukwanda Wiseman Majoka, 34.

The two officers had responded to an alarm sounding at the Rhino Cash and Carry in Harding at 21:30 on Thursday April 30, News24 previously reported.

They drove into a robbery in progress in which a security guard had been shot and killed.

As the suspects fled the scene they opened fire at the police van, which caught alight.

Bystanders rescued a female police officer from the vehicle.

Jaca and Majoka died in the van, which burnt at the scene.

“A warrant of arrest has been issued for [Khohla’s] arrest,” Zwane said.

He urged anyone with information on Khohla’s whereabouts to phone investigating officer Detective Warrant Officer Sonnekus on 039 688 2308 or 082 778 8932.
