Johannesburg - Almost half of news media was dominated by Mandela Day and the Springbok rugby team over the last week, media monitoring company ROi Africa said on Sunday.

Mandela Day made up 32.2% of the news coverage, while the Springboks' game against Australia made up 13.6%, the company’s Tonya Khoury said in a statement.

"True to his [former president Nelson Mandela's] legacy, media focused on the good in South Africa this week. Patriotic news dominated the platforms even more with the Springboks vs Australia game," she said.

Eskom made up 17.4% of the news and the Congress of SA Trade Unions 10.7%.

Other big stories were a group of South Africans detained in China (5.9%), Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu (4%) who was admitted to hospital this week, and the debacle around the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (6.4%) and the firing of its CEO Lucky Montana.

On social media, Mandela Day made up 49.9% of posts.

"Almost one in every two social media posts focused on the charity of South Africans, against other big stories like Eskom and Cosatu," said Khoury.
