Johannesburg - Several events and briefings around the 10-day mourning period for former president Nelson Mandela will be held in various parts of the country on Monday.

The City of Johannesburg will hold a special council meeting at 11:00 in honour of Mandela in Braamfontein. At 15:00, the City will host the mourning sites at various venues.

At the Gauteng Legislature at 10:00, Premier Nomvula Mokonyane will brief the media on plans in the province during the mourning period.

An hour later, the Nelson Mandela Foundation will brief the media on its celebratory service.

The African National Congress will lay out condolence books at 09:00 at its Johannesburg headquarters for citizens to leave messages.

The City of Ekurhuleni plans to hold a special council meeting at 10:00 to pay tribute to Mandela.

A similar sitting of the Limpopo legislature will be held.

In Cape Town, the city will host an evening of remembrance at OR Tambo Hall at 19:00. A wreath-laying ceremony will also take place at the Drakenstein Correctional Centre (formerly the Victor Verster Prison) near Paarl at 06:00.

In Parliament, there will be a joint sitting of the National Assembly and National Council of Provinces at 14:00 to honour Madiba.

Mandela died at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg, on Thursday at the age of 95.
