Mandela taken to hospital

2013-06-08 08:17

Johannesburg - The presidency says former leader Nelson Mandela has been taken to a hospital because of a lung infection.

A statement from President Jacob Zuma's office says Mandela had a recurrence of the illness in the last few days, and that he was transferred to a Pretoria hospital after his condition deteriorated at about 01:30 on Saturday.

The statement says Mandela, who is 94 years old, is in "serious but stable" condition and is receiving expert medical care.

The anti-apartheid leader became president in South Africa's all-race elections in 1994. His health has been failing in recent years.

      frankgerald - 2013-06-08 09:08

I believe that whether a person live or die is not up to us to pray for and we can not pray for any person to live forever. Yes we can pray and wish for a long, good and prosperous life. There is a time to be born and a time to die. Yes we have modern medicine to prolong our lives or to relieve some pain and suffering etc but we all have to die in the end.

  • Adri Mbali Noble - 2013-06-08 08:24

You served your purpose Tata, die in peace. X

      Karolina Dean - 2013-06-08 08:42

You are 100% correct. The old man must now pass on. He is not living anymore - lying on you bed all day staring at the ceiling is not living. People pray for his recovery - he is not going to recover. He is not going to live forever. My feeling is that this is it - Farewell Madiba!

      Jenifer Johnstone - 2013-06-08 08:56

at 95 living is pain and suffering. Going to with God is a release from pain and suffering.

      Annette Hurter Botha - 2013-06-08 10:21

Why do you like having him around? For your pleasure? Let him go and rest, dont be so selfish. He is tired, and I am sure that if he could talk he would ask you to let him go now.He has no life anymore and does not know that he is being kept alive so people can come and stare at him just to say that they saw him. Dont be so cruel, let him go in peace.

It would have been better to hear the news of Former President Mandela's illness from his family or family spokeperson. While we hold dear the Presidency of the Republic - it is my take that they have been more confusing to the public on this matter. Yet Another "mummification" of his illness by the Presidency spokesperson (Mac Maharaj)is just round the corner.

  • Bianca-Anne - 2013-06-08 08:59

Get well Madiba. All the words in the world can not comprehend the love, gratitude we have towards you. We know you old and the day will came that you will leave us to be with the Lord, it is just to hard to think about and to anticipate - all I know is I love you as a father, I love yoy as a mentor, I love you as our Tata.

  • Tumelo Matlotlo - 2013-06-08 09:01

Those saying is time to Madiba, would you say the same if it was your child father or beloved son. Would you say "doctors, I think he has served his purpose and suffered enough, just finish him"? You are indeed disgusting. This is the father of the nation and his very existence gives us hope and always keep us in check of where we come from.

      Joanne Hattingh - 2013-06-08 09:08

Well said Tumelo, I think a lot of people don't realise the part this man played in ensuring a peaceful transition to a democratic South Africa!

      Jo van Katwijk - 2013-06-08 09:16

Tumelo, with all due respect, Mr Mandela is now very old and sickly. It is unlikely that he will ever get 100% well again. Doctors will never "finish" a patient, as you said, but they will treat him as best they can and make his passing pain free and in peace. All we, the people of South Africa, can do now is pray that he will die peacefully.

      Karolina Dean - 2013-06-08 09:38

Actually Tumelo, I have done exactly that - told the doctors to stop trying to save him! My father...I can almost guarantee that Madiba is on some form of assistance to breath and is being pumped full of morphine so he is not aware of his surroundings. He is probably in a lot of pain. You don't understand at all that he had probably lost all his dignity and is totally dependent on being helped all the time. Just because he is an icon he is not going to live forever! Do you think he is? He is old and frail and sick. He will never be able to take do the small things in life that you take for granted. There is a time for all of us and his is now. I have made that call before and I would do it again in a heartbeat...let him go in peace.

  • Khotso Sarele - 2013-06-08 09:03
