Mandela to get more medical tests

2012-12-10 14:34

Johannesburg - Doctors will conduct further tests on former president Nelson Mandela on Monday, the presidency said.

"President Nelson Mandela had a good night's rest," presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj said in a statement.

"He is in good hands."

Mandela, 94, was admitted to a hospital in Pretoria on Saturday for "medical attention".

At the time, Maharaj said that, as had been said before, Mandela would "receive medical attention from time to time which is consistent with his age".

On Sunday morning, President Jacob Zuma visited Mandela in hospital and found him "comfortable, and in good care", Maharaj said.

He said the presidency thanked the public for their messages of support to Mandela and his family.

"We thank the media and the public for affording him, his family and the medical team the necessary privacy and space."

He said Monday was a special day for Mandela. He received the Nobel Peace Prize on 10 December 1993.

Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula reportedly visited Mandela at One Military hospital on Monday. According to the Associated Press Mapisa-Nqakula said Mandela was "doing very, very well".

    Doesn't sound good! :'(

      andre.vandeventer.16 - 2012-12-10 15:06

Every time the "ministry's" spokespersons open their traps they are lying and digging themselves further into the ground". They are turning a plain simple situation into a highly secretive farce. It's funnier than the sitcom "Faulty Towers" with Maharaj playing the role of the incapable John Cleese!

      thabang.mahule - 2012-12-10 15:16

      ja,hope he gets well soon.

      hugh.robinson.56 - 2012-12-10 18:16

Too much is being made of this 'little problem'. my thinking is that they are keeping the old man alive so that he does not spoil the Bloemfontein party

      Montagnes.Bleues - 2012-12-10 19:19

This new zuma anc & mangaung has taken the sparkle out of his eyes and sucked the life out of him too. Even Graça can see it clearly!

      All the best.

Wow, a whole article based on "Doctors will conduct further tests on former president Nelson Mandela on Monday, the presidency said."

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-12-10 15:00

Can we organize someone to take Madiba some fresh linen and edible food? 1 Mil can be hazardous for your health...

      peter.gibbs.5895 - 2012-12-10 15:23

"conduct further tests" to discover that he is old???????????? Let the old man go in peace, at home and with his family.

  • jbooyse - 2012-12-10 14:43

    Get well soon Madiba.

      Steven - 2012-12-10 15:36

unfortunately there is no cure for old age, rather wish him peace and comfort in his twilight years and may his legacy and teachings last forever

      jbooyse - 2012-12-10 15:58

I fully agree. Or in the words of Spock from StarTrek :"Live long and prosper"

  • phumi.ntlabati - 2012-12-10 14:43

We can only hope and pray that the Almighty takes him out of his misery of seeing the party he was prepared to die for, gets single handedly destroyed by those who have narrow selfish interests!

      tineke.lombard - 2012-12-10 15:46

Nsovo you are a disgustingly demented individual - sickening that a human can post such crap !!!!!!

  • koos.vandermerwe.75 - 2012-12-10 14:45

But I thought this was just "normal" checkups from "time to time" and there was "nothing wrong" and Mandela is doing "very very well". So if there is nothing wrong and he is indeed well, why all the tests? - 2012-12-10 15:01

Mac opened his mouth, that means 'lies'!

  • dienaakte.waarheid.7 - 2012-12-10 14:50

One more visit by Zoomer, the old man will kick the bucket. Part of the reason he's sick is because of what Zoomer and his cronies are doing to his legacy.

  • beki.khumalo - 2012-12-10 14:57

The old man has served his purpose in life, it's okay for him to rest now. We must not fear death, it will be the end of us all!

I wish former PRESIDENT TATA speedy recovery,an please people( politicians) don't use the OLD MAN situation to canvas for fame as if u care so much,

  • evan.connock - 2012-12-10 15:07

My 5c worth is that all is NOT what we are being led to believe. Mr Mac profoundly says the test are in keeping with his age... Hmmmm , yes and we all know that to live to 94 is more an exception than the rule. mr Zuma says he (Madiba) is comfortable, is that for someone with or without morphine and an alleged colapsed lung. Came up over the weekend for some tests, now the tests are continuing. Keep in mind that he is a rather important figure, the question is, just how many test are required in a space of 3 days, surely if it were something minor it would have been sorted out allready. The cynic in me say we are being issued with what at best is fairy tale and at worst, more lies.

Pity that he is mortal. We will witness a day he is pronounced dead. Lets just brace ourselves for that worst. He has done his part in this world, its now our time to do our part.

  • Steven - 2012-12-10 15:20

Even if he passes now or continues to kick on, he is head and shoulders the greatest states man to ever rule an totally independent African country. His so called brothers in arms scattered across the continent continue to prove to me how special, how great and how rare Mr Mandela really is. God be with you!

  • mmoledis - 2012-12-10 15:49

Those journalists waiting outside military hospital in Pretoria should leave that erea and go, when there are news they need to get they will as soon as there is some thing for people about. Let Tata Mandela have privacy, because camping on the side of the road to know what is happening they are scaring the nation as if some thing terible has happened ,please let the old man have a peace of mind and privacy.

      liam.doherty.334 - 2012-12-10 18:21

Press do this all over the world when involving a high profile person not just Mandela

  • motshandi.mochandi - 2012-12-10 15:50

nsovo.nkuna.148. I just wonder how old you are, you have posted stupid comments and you call people idiots and pigs. Grow up before its too late for you, you don't behave like a free man. Aish.

  • pieter.koekemoer.54 - 2012-12-10 15:55

People the type of person that this nsovo something is does not warrant any response. Ignore her and what she stands for as she is redolent of why African countries fall apart when Europeans leave. Zero intelligence and I see she went to University? What a joke, probably bought the bloody certificate.

  • motshandi.mochandi - 2012-12-10 15:58

Regardless of comments from stupid people like nsovo.nkuna.148, Madiba has played his part, he is 94 years today that's many years of teaching people how live together. Hope those who continue to instigate racial insults against one another would have learned something by now.

      kelvyn.davidson.1 - 2012-12-11 08:01

Sadly it is ignorance and fear that prevent people from embracing new thoughts, a sheltered life is not one forced it is one adopted. those who choose ignorance shall remain ignorant. Madiba's legacy is not ignorance so the majority of us who understand his message celebrate his humility and humanity

Anybody know what has happened to @zuma.compound? He seems to have run out of steam or perhaps mommy's called him in to have his lunch and to get a change of cloths. She should keep him grounded if she knows what's good for him.

  • ashraf.hendricks - 2012-12-10 16:18

From the Telegraph, "Mandela on Sunday night after the 94 year-old was airlifted to hospital having reportedly stopped speaking amid a deterioration in his condition." and "The Sunday Times, a South African newspaper, quoted an unnamed person close to the Mandela family as saying: "He has not been talking ... he is not looking good. It's clear that something is troubling him." No one else has mentioned this so it might be false. Also, the man is 96 years old though, so this is to be expected. Tough times for an old man. Source:

  • dumaza.dum - 2012-12-10 16:19

Jeepers people, how many more tests are they still going to do?...surely by now they should know what's wrong with him....

  • angela.fields.3910 - 2012-12-10 16:44

@compos.mentis.58, I did not appreciate your comment about the Swazi nation. @nsovo.nkuna.148 is not even native to Swaziland, which, inter alia, is evident by her character. Irrespective of your opinions of King Mswati, the Swazi people are not a backward nation. Perhaps you should take the time to get to know them first before you make such ignorant, slanderous statements. We don’t want to have to change your profile name to Non compas mentis, now do we?

  • Joe - 2012-12-10 17:23

Surely this must be SERIOUS to fly Mandela on Saturday afternoon from the EC to Pretoria. I think as a nation we should be realistic... Mandela will die soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all SA. God has granted him a long life.

      Joe - 2012-12-10 17:58

... to add, the ANC is praying he does not die within the next week due to "all important ANC conference in Mangaung".

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-12-10 18:02

Joe, do you think they would make the announcement even if it happened before Manuang...?

      Joe - 2012-12-10 18:19

@squeegee.pilot - I would be shocked if they did otherwise!

      kelvyn.davidson.1 - 2012-12-11 08:03

you would not suggest that the same thing that happened in Malawi would happen in an advanced SA ;)

  • Prince Kgwale - 2012-12-10 19:11

The old man has nothing to offer any more, wishing him many more years is like wishing him to suffer more. Old age has more sicknesses. I appreciate the part he took, all we have to pray for is to ask God to give us a wise man not these ex convicts who are trying to enrich themselves with our tax money. Only God knows the plans he has about Madiba.

  • nkateko.mabunda.77 - 2012-12-10 21:22
