Johannesburg - A new campaign has been launched by the Mandela family in memory of Nelson Mandela's great-granddaughter Zenani Mandela, who died in a car crash, the family said on Wednesday.

The Zenani Campaign, to be led by Zenani's mother Zoleka Mandela and grandmother Zindzi Mandela, aimed to improve road safety for children, the family said in a statement.

The campaign was unveiled in New York with mayor Michael Bloomberg and would contribute to the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety, especially in developing countries. New York is currently hosting the Commission for Global Road Safety.

Zenani Mandela was killed on 11 June 2010, when the car she was in hit a steel barrier along the M1 north in Johannesburg.

The campaign was also a Mandela Day initiative in honour of former president Nelson Mandela's birthday. Members of the public were encouraged to wear the Zenani wristband and to call for better child road safety.

The accident happened in South Africa why campaign overseas, our roads need fixing and must have sidewalks and certain cultures must be taught to use the sidewalks and not walk 5 abreast in the road.

Zenani wristband? Thats is far fetched.

  • Victor - 2012-05-02 12:09

Waste of time as the roads are too bad a condition and we have far too many dangerous and reckless taxi drivers.

  • Nosiphom - 2012-05-02 12:13

    Strange campaign. A publicity stunt.

  • Hudayfah - 2012-05-02 12:17

oh . .so when things happen to your family members you start with campaigns like these. Maybe if they are robbed and killed then only something will be done about the crime in this country

      Kgolane - 2012-05-02 12:24

@huayfah...Nelson Mandela is an international icon, he can gain international attention for the campaign...what are u, what have u done for the country? .....ill wait...

      Hudayfah - 2012-05-02 13:57

Man, i'm not talking about mandela. Every race in this country appreciates what the man did. I'm talking about this initiative that was started because a family member died. This shouldn't be the case. As much as their family members are dear to them, our family members are dear to us. So by the same tokin they should've had these campaigns long ago.

      Jacqui - 2012-05-02 14:27

Kgolane, Nelson Mandela is not involved. But do tell us what you have done for this country. I would love to hear.

  • DuToitCoetzee - 2012-05-02 12:29

Good idea and maybe in NY because on hope for international help and funds, but do you guys not think those donors are already fed-up with the way we manage our finances?

Start at home with the grandmother: high-speed luxury-Mercedes with the blinded windows which was carrying Winnie and her two bodyguards on the M1 highway near Sandton.

  • Glenda - 2012-05-02 13:53

Oh! So is that why the fuel price has gone up? To fund an overseas excursion. Before you go overseas with your campaigns fix up the service delivery. As I recall that was why the accident accured unsafe road!!!!!!

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-05-02 14:23

No man heybo what a freakin joke.

  • Jacqui - 2012-05-02 14:24

All this while Winnie brings charges against police men doing their jobs because they interfered with her plans while speeding down the road. The family should thus start at home with their campaign and make sure those charges are dropped..

We will waste as much of the people's money as we can, as long as we can go on some nice trips abroad. We will pretend people are killed on our roads for any kind of reason other than lack of driver proficiency. We continue on this road to nowhere and we will eat our cake in private.

  • Shanan - 2012-05-02 23:24

Dude, there is no Mandela extension. There is only one NR Mandela. There rest of the people trying to get mileage from this Great Man. The family are opportunists trying to gain leverage and mileage from his legacy

  • Shanan - 2012-05-02 23:30

I don't see how members of a family, who by default are benefitting from His Holiness: The Greatest, RN Mandela. They should portray the same attributes as RM Mandela, otherwise they are milking the system. I see this coming with all persons with the surname of 'Mandela'. How much money can we make?
