Pietermaritzburg - Is ANC MP Mandla Mandela to wed Kenyan model Natasha Metto?

This follows a new report that the Mandela family held a traditional ceremony, utsiki, introducing Metto to the family’s ancestors.

The utsiki usually comes after lobola negotiations have been completed.

Called by The Witness, Mandla Mandela replied: “Where do you enter on that one?

“There is nothing like that. Thank you and don’t call this number again.”

The Times reported this week that a family elder, Napilisi Mandela, confirmed the ceremony had taken place at the Mvezo Great Place.

“There was a ceremony for utsiki. I was there. The ceremony is for a woman to be married, for her to be introduced,” the elder said.

Divorce, bigamy charge

Mandela is embroiled in a bitter divorce from Tando Mabunu-Mandela, whom he married in community of property in 2004.

Divorce proceedings started in 2009, and in 2010 Mandela married a Reunion Island woman, Anais Grimaud.

Mabunu-Mandela succeeded in getting the court to nullify the marriage.

The union with Grimaud recently hit the rocks.

In 2011, Mandela married Mbalenhle Makhathini of Pelham in Pietermaritzburg, despite there being a court order interdicting the couple from tying the knot.

Mabunu-Mandela then laid a charge of bigamy against her husband.

Her lawyer, Wesley Hayes, said the bigamy case was a criminal matter and prosecutors were dealing with it.

“We cannot comment on the alleged wedding plans with another woman because we have no proof that he is actually getting married again,” Hayes said.

Eastern Cape National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said the bigamy case against Mandela was referred back to the police because there was not enough evidence.

“We have not made a decision to prosecute because we are still waiting for police to make further investigations before we can prosecute,” he said.
