Johannesburg - Winnie Madikizela-Mandela says the threat of violence and damage to property is the main reason Mandla Mandela shouldn’t be allowed to hold a family meeting at Nelson Mandela’s Qunu home.

The Eastern Cape High Court n Mthatha heard on Tuesday that Madikizela-Mandela was aggrieved that she wasn’t consulted about the meeting, which is set for Friday, according to City Press.

Mvuzo Notyesi, Madikizela-Mandela’s lawyer, said Mandla and the second respondent in the matter, Daludumo Mtirara, had no right to call the meeting because neither lived in the Qunu house.

“You cannot wake up one day and decide to call a meeting in somebody’s house without their permission,” Notyesi told Judge Zamani Nhlangulela.

Nhlangulela asked whether Mandla Mandela posed any threat of violence as a person, and Notyesi replied that the Mvezo chief was a “violent man”.

Mandla, Nelson Mandela’s eldest grandson, has been charged with pointing a firearm and assault in a case that’s been running in the Mthatha regional court.

Notyesi told the court that Madikizela-Mandela had a legal interest in the meeting, because she had laid a claim of ownership on the property.

This pending claim meant a meeting that could turn violent shouldn’t be allowed, Notyesi argued.

Madikizela-Mandela was not in court today.

Mandla, accompanied by his wife Mbalentle Makathini and his mother Nolusapho, appeared relaxed throughout the proceedings this morning.

The case continues, with Mandla’s lawyer Billy Gundelfinger due to address the court this afternoon.
