Johannesburg - Two prison officials and an inmate were stabbed and wounded by prisoners at the Mangaung Correctional Centre on Thursday, a special management team at the prison said.

The G4S security company warders and an inmate were stabbed with sharp objects during a gang-related "war" among prisoners, said Zacharia Modise.

Modise, the Gauteng correctional services deputy commissioner, was seconded to lead a team taking over from G4S on Wednesday.

Modise said the officers were taken to hospital for treatment, and were later discharged. The inmate was treated at the prison hospital.

Just before 14:00 he said the prison was in lock-down and inmates were being searched for weapons.

The correctional services department took over the management of the prison due to concerns over the safety for inmates and workers.

Modise said G4S had a shortage of employees after workers, who went on strike recently were fired.

Last week a female warder was held hostage by four prisoners, and a number of prison officials were stabbed in separate incidents.

He said the task team was drafting a safety plan expected to indicate the way forward.
