Grahamstown - Eastern Cape police are searching for four armed men who attacked an elderly couple on their farm at Salem, near Grahamstown, over the weekend.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Milanda Coetzer said the 70-year-old farmer, identified as John Kinnel, and his 71-year-old wife, Madeleine, were injured in the attack on Friday evening.

Coetzer said police and private security had responded to a panic button alert from the farm.

She said John had been beaten over the head with blunt instruments by four men armed and had also been stabbed, while his wife was throttled and gagged.

Coetzer said Madeleine managed to push the panic button.

"She reported that they had threatened her that they would cut her injured husband's throat if she did not tell them where to find their firearms, but the couple does not own any firearms," said Coetzer.

The men were seen leaving the farm in a white Nissan Hardbody bakkie. They got away with all the electronic goods on the farm.

Coetzer said police were investigating a case of attempted murder; house robbery; assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and theft of a motor vehicle.

She said John had been admitted to Settlers Hospital in Grahamstown, where he is in a stable condition.
