Manhunt after fatal Hillbrow chase

2013-01-15 10:06

Johannesburg - A manhunt has been launched for two robbers who were involved in a confused Hillbrow chase on Monday when police mistook a colleague for a robber and shot him dead.

Another two police officers were wounded during the chase in Johannesburg.

Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini on Tuesday said investigations were still continuing.

He said the name of the killed policeman would be released later on Tuesday after next of kin had been notified.

The other two officers were still in hospital, both in a critical condition.

One arrest

Police managed to arrest one man after the attempted robbery in Hillbrow on Monday.

The saga started when police officers ran after one of the suspected robbers.

Another officer, 29, in a police van, also followed him and when he blocked his path he was shot and wounded in the neck.

Two other officers, in civilian clothes, followed the shooter with their weapons drawn when they were confronted by other officers who thought they were fleeing criminals. The two constables were shot.

One officer, aged 31, was shot and killed, and another, aged, 30, was wounded.

The wounded officers were taken to Milpark Hospital.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating.

how can this happen, is it bad training or bad management even in civvy clothes if you are chasing a suspect with drawn guns they should have something that idetifies them like in the states their badges hang around their neck RIP and to the injured get well soon.

      valkerie.koekemoer - 2013-01-15 10:31

..and why no bullet proof jackets? Even more so you're in civvies and out on a case / chase! Another bungle for the SAPS. *sigh*

      TshilidziPhuravhathu - 2013-01-15 11:01

I have to dis agree, this happened at my block yesterday and i doubt if bad traing had anything to do with it. it looked like it wa by coincidence that the cops were in the area doing their rounds at the time and there was no time to ready yourself for the action that was about to unfold. for all its worth I say the SAPS did their best give the secumstance....

      nuus.reeder - 2013-01-15 11:10

I think you're too quick to judge. Situations can get out of control, accidents can happen - at least the guys were all doing their best to catch the criminals.

      john.kirkwood.9619 - 2013-01-15 11:44

not saying the basic training is poor i am asking the question, how can this happen and is it bad traing or bad management surly there must be some form of identification that should be used by sap as not all officers could possibly know each other, if there is no such thing my suggestion is get it implemented asap so that this cant happen again

      jacowium - 2013-01-15 11:47

@ Valkerie Police can not walk around with bullet proof jackets all day, simply because they are too heavy for that purpose. They are used in cases of specialised operations by able personnel, yes, but not suitable for everyday protection. (Which is also a saving grace in a way, as it also keeps criminals from wearing such vests all day long.)

      kobie.nel1 - 2013-01-15 12:53

In a situation like that things can get confusing fast. If you see a person with a gun in hand, it is you or him first, and recognition must be done in a split second from both sides. Andrenaline is flowing fast and thick, it is not a "hello, how are you and who are you" situation. I feel not only for the dead and wounded guys, but also theones who shot them. I can imagine how they must feel.

      Eterni80 - 2013-01-15 12:55

it's bad enough when a cop is killed by a crook, now they're killing each other

      stuart.bigmore - 2013-01-15 12:58

idont understand that they were not wearing bullit proof jackets whilst patrolling a heavy criminalised area? when they pull me off in a road block they wear these jackets? if they were allowed to patrol without protective equipment then how can they carry weapons? surely the two go together. it just seems a crying shame that one died unecessarily.

@John true that mate, people are saying the saps' basic training is poor and its not it was just unfortunate because Hillbrow cops were shot by jeppe cops otherwise if hillbrow cops responded first this wudn't have happen because we know each other!

      john.kirkwood.9619 - 2013-01-15 11:22

stavious not saying the basic training is poor i am asking the question, how can this happen and is it bad traing or bad management surly there must be some form of identification that should be used by sap as not all officers could possibly know each other, if there is no such thing my suggestion is get it implemented asap so that this cant happen again, please accept my condolences for your colleage

      stavious.mamatepa - 2013-01-15 13:08

@Procold2 i wasn't refering to you mate,i read your comment it was loud and clear that you were asking its just that most comments were about poor training since yesterday because they don't know what happened exactly. What happened yesterday is one of those mistakes most of us shud have done especialy responding to a complain where an officer has been shot. I wasn't against your comment!

This is a sad case of good cops going down ~we need them?? spontaneous action confusion no coms?? sorry guys??

  • linda.horsfield.77 - 2013-01-15 11:27

What is even sadder is this cop will have died in vain - because the court will grant him bail and he will just disappear. It is time that bail is denied to anyone caught during the commission of a crime - because they cannot possibly be innocent. This policy that you are innocent until found guilty by a court of law is a lot of rubbish. By allowing criminals caught red handed out on bail is actively condoning and promoting criminal activitiy. Then, holding a trial just clogs up the courts, and wastes the taypayers money. There should be specific penalties for specific crimes so that its not necessary to waste taxpayers money on long drawn out trials - where the accused does everything possible to cause as many delays as possible - and unscrupulous lawyers use legally invalid justifications for why the perpetrator shouldnt be held accountable for their actions like - its his first offence (so the law is only applicable to the second act of criminality) he is young (well if he was that young he would be tried as a minor) he is poor (so only the rich have to obey the law) he is uneducated (so only the clever have to obey the law) he has children (so only people without children have to obey the law) I also think that the policy of allowing a criminal to pay a fine instead of serving time is unacceptable, as it allows the rich an advantage over the poor - which contavenes the constitution which promises equality for all before the law.

Sincere condolences to the family of this policeman, may he RIP. Hope these criminals are cought soon.

  • dumisani.pambuka - 2013-01-15 15:11

Its another case of shoot now and ask questions later, obviously they needed to ask the cops (civilian) to surrender and then identify themselves for this not to have happended, sad.

  • jacques.dutoit.5011 - 2013-01-16 03:42

    INCOMPOTENCE

  • dave.prinsloo - 2013-01-16 06:57

tragic, pathetic, but not surprising - hillbrow cops ARE robbers as well, so no wonder they get confusec. Hillbrow has 99% corrupt police members.
