Manyi 'sacking' overdue: DA

2012-06-08 13:07

Johannesburg - Government spokesperson Jimmy Manyi should have been dismissed long ago, the DA said on Friday.

Responding to media reports that Manyi's contract would not be renewed when it expires in August, spokesperson Mmusi Maimane said: "It’s about time".

Earlier, both Manyi and Harold Maloka - spokesperson for the minister of performance monitoring and evaluation in the presidency, Collins Chabane - dismissed the report as unfounded.

Maimane said in a statement that Manyi "consistently showcased behaviour unbecoming of government’s chief communicator" and advanced five reasons why he believed this to be the case.

In June 2010 he was suspended as director general of the labour department after he allegedly tried to promote his private interests in an official meeting.

Another reason was Manyi's "racism" after comments claiming an “over-supply” of coloured people in the Western Cape and that Indians were over-represented in management positions.

Maimane also felt Manyi undermined media freedom.

"Last year, Mr Manyi made headlines for suggesting that the government could withdraw advertising revenue from newspapers that do not toe the government line."

He also said that Manyi was "willing to use shady tactics to dodge accountability" and had poor relationships with the media.

Earlier, Manyi denied a report that he received a letter indicating that his contract would not be renewed.

"There is no such thing; it is a complete fabrication," Manyi said.

Maloka echoed these sentiments.

"The minister did not have a discussion with Manyi regarding his contract and there was no such letter."

The Mail & Guardian reported that Manyi had received a letter from Chabane to inform him that his contract would not be renewed when it expired in August.

An unnamed government official was reported as saying: "Effectively [Manyi] has been sacked from government, in particular for repeatedly making embarrassing remarks".

Another official reportedly claimed that Manyi's comments on the Gauteng e-tolls were "thoughtless".

@Ovapriv.: Shame - you poor man. Must be hard being such a bigot blinded by race. If you actually understood the term "racism" you'd have written: "Blacks, Coloureds, Whites, Indians, Asians anyone, should unite against those who wish to oppress." But, since you qualify one term with race against yet another... you are by definition that which you claim to want to unite against. In other words: A hypocrite.

      Koos - 2012-06-08 18:22

  • Gavin - 2012-06-08 13:42

rome did fall as they couldn't decide whether it was to be ruled by one dude, or lots of dudes. in SA, the wheels grind slowly on as once a year (forgive my ignorance but I simply don't know how often the another national crisis party meets) the ANC meet. the agenda probably includes things like: amount of money spent of fruitless projects, money that must be diverted away from things like water and energy generation to our pockets, the arms deal, why the chicken crossed the road etc. they then drink some beer, hug each other and retire for the night. the next day, they will tackle issues like, why water is wet and winter is cold. Jimmy Manyi is a spineless little cretin given a club by the ANC who themselves all seem to have people speaking on their behalf's (why no one speaks for themselves is a mystery to me, but job creation is something they claim to want to do...) in a thousand years time, Africa might just well be the largest game reserve on the planet - if left in the hands by idiots like this..

  • Bra Tebzaah Sibilanga - 2012-06-08 13:49

He's very well educated,he's not gonna miss any sleep over this.I respect him for calling a spade a spade, not a garden tool.

      Joe - 2012-06-08 14:04

      edwardsch - 2012-06-08 14:08

Correct - he is the TOOL!!!!!!!!!!

      Lacrimose - 2012-06-08 18:56

Manyi for President. I hear the WC lost it's Zoo. So much for "management".

      edwardsch - 2012-06-08 14:10

Considering it was privately owned, I do not understand the point. Unless you are referring to the possibility that Parliment may move to the green pastures of Gauteng. If that is the case, then that zoo can go !!!!!!!!!

      Stlouis Heidtmann - 2012-06-08 15:26

you are the biggest idiot on this site f+-k off please anc moron

  • roy.wadhams.1 - 2012-06-08 14:00

Should have happened long time ago but knowing this ANC government this man will be put into a more important position to spew more rubbish and to protect a USELESS lot of corrupt ANC officials.

  • Rob - 2012-06-08 14:06

All ministerial appointments should be subject to approval and veto by the main opposition party. Now that would level the playing field and balance the books.

  • edwardsch - 2012-06-08 14:13

Probably making a new position available for him. He will be the chief lecturer for Spin Doctors.. He is well qualified for this position as he spews such rubbish. Watch this space !!!!!!!!

  • nigel.burgess.52 - 2012-06-08 14:18

    Away with the parasites... away.

  • Tim Norris - 2012-06-08 14:21

I think we need to have a Government Spokesman to explain what all the other Spokesmen mean, and to be available when the others all hide because It is too difficult.

Cheerio Jimmy, you certainly won't be missed!

  • david.baird.568 - 2012-06-08 15:30

Whenever I listen to Mr. Manyi speak he just so reminds me of what it was like during the years of NAT RULE. Those guys were so ignorant, dogmatic and arrogant. The only difference is that they were white while these are black. Other than that they could be the same person. So hostile, ghastly and OUTDATE AND OUT OF TOUCH WITH SUCCESSFUL NATIONS

  • Phillys - 2012-06-08 15:42

I agree with the DA. All that was missing from this dolt's ensemble was a tether and an organ-grinder

  • Bibi - 2012-06-08 15:47

Long overdue. He did nothing for the new SA. In a country where the government does nothing for nation building, Manyi is like a slow releasing poison arrow.

  • robert.g.martin.1 - 2012-06-08 15:50

Yeah, he clearly isn't a good person.and not so bright either !

  • Clinton Bowden - 2012-06-08 16:20

And that would be a victory for the people

  • Nick - 2012-06-08 16:44

Jimmy Manyi is one of the more shameful appointments to government. He is in a position where he has no credentials to be and adds no value whatsoever to anything he represents. He was no good in the private sector in fact he was hardly ever there as he was attending political and BMF/NAFCOC meetings in great abundance. He thinks by making a noise against apartheid and other minority groups he will get a favoured ear with the powers that be. We ll he did but with no idea about what he was doing and putting himself in the public eye as a spokesman he had not worked out that he would be seen by ALL for the idiot that he is. Along with notable others in recent times he has done the ANC and South Africa huge disservice. We need as a nation to stop accommodating the village idiot types such as Manyi. Jimmy, I hope you are fired - complete incompetence would be the main charge.

  • Ron - 2012-06-08 17:56

Jimmy's racism will prevent him from achieving much in his life. He's a fool - and you can quote me! I know!

  • Seena - 2012-06-08 18:20

leave this brother alone, he says a lot of things that make a lot of sense to the peoples of africa and all like minded

      Nicolaas - 2012-06-08 19:29

@Seena, you can not be serious!!! For GODSAKE, this thing called manyi is the buggest racist, all he can see is black, no other culture or color matter to him. I guess you have no brains that is why what ever this idiot spew, you believe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • LabAdv2 - 2012-06-08 18:59

Long ovedue all right.......does this mean the ANC is becoming serious about, corruption, bribery and incompetence????

  • Nthambeleni - 2012-06-08 20:15

      marleze.baartman - 2012-06-08 21:55

And I will never take u seriously, you are obviously an idiot and always feel sorry for yourself.

  • marleze.baartman - 2012-06-08 21:07

Really long overdue, he did nothing for nation building just caused more hatred amongst different race groups.

  • Aubrey - 2012-06-09 11:30

    thank you my lord .

  • Johan - 2012-06-09 12:48

Wait, don't hold your breath. He might be appointed in some other high profile job. Failure or poor performance is usually well rewarded by our governing party. On the other hand they might not see Manyi's performance as poor and might wish to reward him for with even a better high paying job.

  • ThaboShakuNews24 - 2012-06-12 23:10

    Where to now Jimmy?

  • byron.jay.37 - 2012-08-06 08:43
