Durban - Paramedics and rescue technicians worked for over three hours to free a 6-year-old boy whose foot was trapped in an escalator at the Gateway shopping centre in Umhlanga on Tuesday night.

The boy, understood to be a Briton, was seriously injured and was taken to hospital once he was freed.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said medics were called to the scene shortly after 21:00.

“We received an emergency call and responded to the incident with an ambulance and an advanced life support paramedic. When we arrived the fire department and an off duty technician were working fervently to extricate the child’s foot from the stairs,” Botha said.

“Paramedics tirelessly worked for hours to treat and stabilise the child while the extrication efforts continued.

“At around midnight emergency workers managed to free the child and paramedics were then able to transport him to a local hospital for the specialised care that he required,” he added.

The off-duty technician who sprung to action when he realised the child was trapped was described by Botha as “the hero of the night”.

“This guy really got stuck in and was working with tools to try and remove the stairs and get the child free,” he said.
