Margate woman kills armed robber

2012-10-03 22:28

Johannesburg - A woman shot and killed a robber in her home in Margate, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

Captain Thulani Zwane said two men armed with knives attacked a 39-year-old woman while her husband was away on Tuesday morning.

"After she was seriously assaulted, the men began stealing some of her items," he said.

The woman managed to get hold of a firearm belonging to her husband and shot one of the robbers.

The other robber fled from the scene.

She alerted police and was later taken to hospital.

A 25-year-old man was declared dead at the scene.

His accomplice, a 27-year-old man, was later arrested in Uvongo. A knife and some of the stolen items were recovered in his possession.

He was expected to appear in the Ramsgate Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Well done, your heroism is commendable!!! Nathi, put that in your crime stats, file it under "Taking out the garbage"!

Gun Free SA's advice to women being attacked is to co-operate and be submissive.. and let the criminals go free to do it to the next woman, and the next.. Good on her husband for having a gun around, and good for her having the pluck to grab it and defend herself effectively, and save how many innocent people down the line the same fate as her's by stopping this criminal's career for good. Best to you woman, I wish you a speedy recovery. - 2012-10-04 10:08

Lest we forget ladies and Gents, the law of the country favours the criminal. She will most likely be prosecuted for illegal use of a firearm (It belonged to her husband and he was not "present" during it's use) and her husband will be prosecuted under the Firearms act for not securing his firearm properly as his wife had access to it. It's time citizens of this country are given rights similar to those in the USA to protect life, limb AND property - If they are in your house, shoot to kill (No need to first check that they are facing you with a weapon etc... by that time you will most likely be dead.)

      maylani.bezuidenhout - 2012-11-05 10:36

Pity she had to be 'seriously assaulted' before getting to the gun. They would have slaughtered her... And that poor child, the six year old little girl... Maybe its time we DO take the law into our own hands? We are all so sick and tired of living in fear!

      patsy.smith.125 - 2012-11-02 12:40

One can always put an old kitchen knife into the dead intruder's hand (without your fingerprints, naturally) and say he/she/it was armed. Even if you are a small woman, you can still be had up for murder. The law today is on the criminal's side, NOT the victim's. The law does not seem to realise that hands can also be called weapons of destruction

i like this woman, it is good that she killed the robber. we are sick and tired of them

  • Muffin_man_can - 2012-10-04 05:38

Fantastic! I hope we read more stories like this where criminals get what they deserve - death

  • kevin.nicklin - 2012-10-04 06:03

It's time to bring back the death sentence. Criminals must fear perpetrating the crimes that they commit. Look at Muslim countries. When it is time for them to go and pray they don't even lock up their shops because they know potential criminals fear having their hands chopped of for stealing. Bring such law to SA. We as a nation are tired of being brutalized by criminals! Well done to this lady for defending herself, just sorry you didn't get the other criminal as he will be out of police custody in no time and performing the same horrendous acts against innocent tax paying citizens!

  • saleem.dawood.92 - 2012-10-04 06:05

Shoot to kill. If the police/govt wont protect us or bring back the death penalty, you cannot blame ordinary people for defending themselves.

      christine.briedenhann.5 - 2012-10-04 06:13

I agree fully. Government should put a big emphasis on the high crime rate and start doing something about this.

  • heita.hoesit - 2012-10-04 06:32

@jockblack, it is true that most of these brutal crimes are committed by us"a certain racial group", that is no secret. For us to be hiding behind racism and not face reality is sad.

  • fairness.iseverything - 2012-10-04 06:39

The bees won't do it, the ants won't do it, the police won't do it...tralalalaa Then we will do it. Aim for the head I say. Yellow, pink, blue, employed or not. Threaten my family or their safety, its a promise I will do it!

  • cindy.wrathex.ruthven - 2012-10-04 06:48

"That's it, put these dark things with their dark intentions where they belong, deep under the ground." We live in South Africa, the majority of people are African and thus black, and by logical deduction the majority of criminals are black too, why do you have to point it out - are you retarded ? Regarding the article, good for citizens who fight back against criminals, this woman was brave and did the right thing.

  • B.b. - 2012-10-04 06:50

Good husband for leaving a gun to protect his family and the wise was so wise enough to get hold of a gun. She forgot that she's a woman lol that's great. Some women would cry non-stop knowing exactly where the gun is, but won't bother trying to get hold of it. That's bravery. Mmmmmmmmm I wish I could have such a woman dat can do the same thing when I'm away to the robbers.

  • henk.tredoux.7 - 2012-10-04 06:55

True, from the article it's not clear if the robbers are black or white..... Should it matter or make a difference? However the story is also covered by Die Beeld, there it's reported that one of the robbers is a grade 10 pupil......perhaps they also didn't get their textbooks?

  • sheldon.bubanj - 2012-10-04 07:01

Dear wwerum , remember this, if we all leave we take our tax money with us. We take our job providing businesses with us. Who then will look after you? Then your wonderful government will be forced to sell this beautiful country out from underneath you to the worst colonisers of the all - the Chinese! Then only will you understand oppression.

      patsy.smith.125 - 2012-11-02 12:48

Gun Free S.A. WAKE UP indeed! Are you so stupid that you don't realise you are depriving the potential victims of self-protection? OR are you some of the same criminals who rob, rape and murder? You want a gun free country? Disarm all the criminals FIRST then see about the rest of us.

  • tshegorapoo - 2012-10-04 07:45

  • alison.scheppel - 2012-10-04 07:52

Well done. If government can't protect us, we have to do it ourselves. People who don't respect the law have terrorised this country for too long with the apparant approval of the state.

  • richard.bernardo.982 - 2012-10-04 08:04

May we bestow the countries highest honor award for bravery to this victim turned heroine! We SALUTE you Madam. Any loss of life is tragic, but it goes to show that all victims of crime are now completely fed up with this violent crime being inflicted on honest hard working citizens. All communities are handling this scourge in their own way - whether its a lady shooting a robber in the suburbs or a mob burning / necklacing (which we more often than not dont hear about in the press) a criminal in the townships...We have had enough. The police are doing what they can do within their capabilities and yes is lacking in some respects, but where does the buck stop? It stops with the political masters that should be doing their work giving the police the moral and political leadership necessary to fight crime effectively. Instead they create bogus crime statistics which they actually think the "niaeve" public will believe. I was shot in an armed robbery on the 2nd of August at my home, and am lucky to be alive. Since then there have been 45 serious attacks in our immediate area - within a 10km radius, and when looking at the crime statistics for my area it shows a -33% on last years figures...What nonsense. There is a total onslaught manifesting itself through crime in South Africa - clear to see for all. My advice to ALL South Africans affected or vulnerable to crime - Arm your self, be Alert, be prepared at ALL TIMES! Its going to get a lot worse before its gets any better!

      patsy.smith.125 - 2012-11-02 12:52

Especially as the criminals are seldom caught and very few ever seem to get as far as Court. I am not a supporter of vigilantism - as a rule - but our country is in such a lawless mess, that we appear to have no choice.

  • briana.scott - 2012-10-04 08:07

Well done! If nothing is being done to stop what is happening and it is all being swept under the rug, we are being left with no other choice. We arm ourselves and protect our families. Shoot to kill is the only policy, because we are being treated with the same care. Murder Murder Murder. I don't care what colour, creed or breed, you enter my home to do harm I will do whatever it takes to protect my little ones.

      Your English is so delicious....

  • ludlowdj - 2012-10-04 08:08

Pity she didn't have time to kill the second one as well!, we desperately need more people to overcome their inherent fear of killing criminals. It is also such a pity that the black majority has to suffer under the perception created by a small percentage of their population. The truth however is that the black community will have to accept this label until they clear out their own communities and bring the criminals amongst them to justice, something they have already proven they are willing and capable of doing when the crime is committed in their own communities.

  • Kurt Kassen - 2012-10-04 08:13

  • ludlowdj - 2012-10-04 08:17

Genocide watch international has stated on record that there is deliberate inaction by the South African government in respect of the genocide of whites in South Africa.

      patsy.smith.125 - 2012-11-02 12:59

Cooked statistics, criminals not brought to justice (including the best known one!!!)Ineffectual police due to lack of training, also possibly benefitting from the crimes, in a few cases. Decent police, trying to protect the public, being hounded. Farmers slaughtered indescriminately. WTF do these idiots think their food is going to come from in the future? Subsistence farming? Get real! Stupidity reigns!

  • Giyangethambo - 2012-10-04 08:18

in my culture we do not celebrate death.

      clive.toerien - 2012-10-04 09:21

      Who cares

      patsy.smith.125 - 2012-11-02 13:03

Well, good for you, Giyangethambo. Aren't you lucky to be crime-free... My infirm, older sister (81 years old) was murdered, all for a TV. IF the cops had ever caught the killer, I certainly would have celebrated his death... and wished him in hell at the same time

      gregory.hill.984 - 2012-11-05 10:17

Giya, so in your culture do you support criminal activities, Rape, theft and 2 armed guys against a woman? If so, then you have a very interesting culture. No one would celebrate death of dangerous criminals if the dangerous criminals do not exist. Every religion teaches you murder and theft is wrong Also, Zulu culture, in the old days and ways, it was death for herd boys to squeeze the milk directly from the teats of the kings cows into their mouths (google it) sounds a bit excessive to me

  • sarecen.smith - 2012-10-04 08:20

  • Corrie Brits - 2012-10-04 08:27

Giyan in your culture its safe to rape a child and an elderly woman to rid a person of aids. its time that we forget about culture and start standing together like true South Africans. White, Black, indian and coloured. we are South Africa. Stand together and fight crime. Shoot the Bastard that enters your house in the middle of the night. Crime is killing us its time to kill crime....!!!!

      Giyangethambo - 2012-10-04 14:16

      i agree,

  • tshegorapoo - 2012-10-04 08:32

To all the racist comments, I applaude and encourage what this woman did, I would do the same thing any given day, HOWEVER, THIS IS NOT ABOUT COLOUR, ITS ABOUT CRIME!!! A criminal is a criminal... whether white, black, blue or orange. Just like a murder is a murder!!! It irks me soo much me when too much focus is put on 'farm murders'. How many people get killed in townships, villages or surburbs daily? Really now, get over yourselves!!!

      james.hurley.1401 - 2012-11-05 11:16

Agreed - some white people like to moan on and on about crime as a racial thing, but statistically the townships are hardest hit. Many people live in a fantasy world where they think crime is only black people robbing white people. Not true.

  • flysouth - 2012-10-04 08:38

Whilst understanding the trauma this lady went through, how happy I am to read of the outcome where she was not raped and butchered in her own home by animals, but that by virtue of having available a simple tool called a gun, she turned the tables spectacularly on such scum! She deserves a medal for helping cull the criminal population.

      carol.brand.5030 - 2012-11-06 11:15

amen to that! Anybody out there listening? can we give her a medal, please, someone? and lady, consider yourself hugged!!!
