Marikana - An ANC ward councillor has confirmed the death of a woman allegedly hit by a police rubber bullet on Saturday while buying food from a spaza shop in Marikana.

Paulina Masutlo, an ANC councillor in Wonderkop, died at the Paul Kruger Hospital in Rustenburg around noon on Tuesday.

According to ward councillor Nelson Mpongwana, he saw a deep gash on Masutlo’s knee on Saturday before arranging transport for her to hospital.

Three other women who were with Masutlo at the time were also reportedly injured.

The area was the scene of violent clashes after police opened fire with rubber bullets on mineworkers who had earlier surrendered their weapons.

Forty-six people have died since a wildcat strike at the Lonmin mine turned violent about six weeks ago.

incredibly sad and tragic, if indeed this is true. Surely hope the loss of life will initiate much needed positive reforms in policing, indiscriminate use of force, seemingly with impunity. It seems like at times people are simply used for target practice, with no plan on proper use of police weapons or crowd control. I am terribly sorry for her loss and it had to come to this for so many.

It is sad indeed.....but couldn't this journalist do a bit more research before claiming its a rubber bullet that killed the lady. After reading this you are just left with questions....was the "deep gash" confirmed to be as result of a rubber bullet, why did she die was it because of the loss of blood or something else?

so,this woman died due to an injury on her knee????

  • martin.gardner.923 - 2012-09-20 00:11

I dont understand? She died from a knee wound, doesn't make sense unless she attracted an infection (deadly at that), anyway another unfortunate scenario.

sorry I just don't believe any of this

Huh? Either this is one of your frequently annoying half baked stories or something else was really the course of her death.

If it was not an anc councillor, it would not be a headline would it now!!
