Marikana not properly documented - lawyer

2012-10-30 14:01

Johannesburg - A police crime scene expert failed to properly document the shooting of protesting miners, the commission of inquiry into the Marikana shooting heard on Tuesday.

SABC news reported that this was the contention of Dumisa Ntsebeza, the lawyer representing the families of those killed in the shooting near Lonmin's platinum mine in the North West.

He accused police officer Lieutenant Colonel Cornelius Johannes Botha of not following standard procedures in his report on the matter.

Botha replied he could not follow these procedures due to the urgency of the situation.

On Monday, Ntsebeza began questioning Botha about the video he took from a police helicopter on the day of the shooting. The 40-minute video was screened at the inquiry on Monday.

On August 16, police shot dead 34 miners and wounded 78 in an effort to disperse strikers near the Lonmin mine.

The judicial commission, chaired by retired Judge Ian Farlam, resumed public hearings on the matter in Rustenburg on Monday.

I am seriously starting to believe the inquiry stopped, as the police will only provide them with 'what they want" the commission to see and hear.

Thank goodness younger people are getting older, and older people are dying... New generations have noticed how you just managed to screw everyone over and over.. time for change has begun

Col Botha, the so called crime scene expert is a liar.No expert in whatever field can give a pathetic testimony like his.In his 28yrs service he used camcorder twice on the helicopter during Marikane massacre. For the other years what was he doing as an expert. He must be dishonourably discharged and pay back the salary he was earning.
