Cape Town - Marli van Breda, 16, who survived a brutal axe attack in January that left three members of her family dead, has been discharged from hospital and is now undergoing rehabilitation.

Netwerk24's Samantha van den Berg reported on Tuesday that Marli left Vergelegen Medi-Clinic in Somerset West on Saturday.

Advocate Martin Coetzee, who represents her, said the family does not want to reveal the name of the rehabilitation centre where she is being treated so that her recovery can take place without disruptions.

She will be having occupational and physical therapy to regain her strength after spending nearly six weeks in hospital as a result of her serious injuries. She suffered a deep gash to her head and her jugular was severed.

According to Coetzee, Marli's health has improved considerably. She can talk, but not for long, and is not yet able to make a complete police statement.

Marli's parents, Martin, 54, and Teresa, 55, and her older brother, Rudi, 22, were all killed in the attack in their home on the De Zalze golf estate in Stellenbosch on 27 January. Her brother, Henri, 20, survived and has since been living with an uncle.

No arrests have been made, but police have reportedly handed the murder docket to the National Prosecuting Authority for a decision.
