Cape Town - Marli van Breda, who was seriously injured in an axe attack on her family last week, is under constant police guard, it was reported on Tuesday.

Police work in shifts standing guard near the 16-year-old’s hospital bed, reported Netwerk24. Even family and close friends are barred from seeing her.

Only doctors and other medical personnel are allowed to see her.

Family spokesperson Ben Rootman told News24 on Monday Marli was stable.

She underwent brain surgery after suffering a severe head trauma and also sustained a severed jugular, Netwerk24 stated.

At the weekend, an audio clip emerged of Marli’s brother, Henri, calmly telling emergency operators about the bloody scene at his home on the De Zalze golf estate. Henri was relatively unharmed in the incident.

Neighbours told Die Burger they didn’t hear any sounds in the house on the night of the murders. The estate’s management has also said there were no break-ins and the family received no visitors that night.

A week after the murders, police have yet to arrest anyone or even name the victims but this could be to protect Marli, forensic expert Deon Knobel told Netwerk24.

Knobel said police must ensure she isn't influenced before making a statement and is possibly a threat to the suspect who might try to harm her.

Knobel also said police might be withholding information because they want to make sure they have a strong case against potential suspects.
