Max du Preez: Has the ANC gone mad?

2011-10-06 20:31

Cape Town - Max du Preez has, in a manner of speaking, shaken his head in disbelief over the ANC's vehement reaction to him using the word "maaifoedies" with regard to its leadership.

The ANC had demanded and apology after Du Preez in a Facebook posting had explained the etymology of the word "maaifoedies", which an old ANC comrade had used to refer to the party in an e-mail about the Dalai Lama debacle.

In a Facebook response, Du Preez asks if the party has gone "completely and utterly mad", and says that it "thinks the people of SA are complete imbeciles".

"Maaifoedie is a perfectably acceptable word in good company, but I explained via an old book on Afrikaans etymology that originally it actually meant the same as the American swear word. I did NOT call the ANC 'motherfuckers'," he wrote.

Du Preez had traced it back to being the Afrikaans version of the American word "motherfucker".

He also referred to a previous occasion where the ANC took him to the press ombudsman "who laughed them out of court".

"The ANC really thinks the people of SA are complete imbeciles," he wrote.

The ANC had taken great exception to a Facebook post by du Preez, where he referred to ANC leaders as "maaifoedies".

He goes on to explain that it's derived from Malay and Portuguese words, and the Malay-Portuguese language used by slaves in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in South Africa - a major influence of early Afrikaans.

English-Afrikaans dictionaries give the English of maaifoedie as rascal, or scoundrel.

Du Preez then ends off his post by also calling the ANC-leadership "maaifoedies".

"So ek se ook aan die ANC-leierskap vanoggend: Julle maaifoedies!"

Outburst

The ANC, however, condemned "in the strongest terms as totally unacceptable" what they deemed to be an "outburst" by Du Preez calling ANC leaders "you motherfuckers".

"Du Preez, also a public figure, a former journalist and a political commentator, should know better than to publicly get entangled in using an expletive like that, stooping to gutter level and not just insulting, but also defaming all leaders of the ANC," the party said.

"Using profanity published in a public space like this doesn’t add any feather to his cap, but casts a shadow over his reputation."

"If Du Preez wishes to differ on opinion with any person in the ANC, it is his right to do just that.

"But, that does not give him a right to use such language [no matter how he tries to explain, repeat and even translate it into English] or to be the bully of the block attempting to hurt people with words," the statement said.

Those associating with Du Preez or have syndicated his writings, should take note of his abhorable action, the party said, adding that he owes all South Africans an apology.

      PinkandProud - 2011-10-06 20:46

The maaifoedies obviously can't stand hearing the truth. Well said Max.

      4b6 - 2011-10-06 20:50

Sounds like a storm in a teacup specifically designed as an attempt to kill coverage of the Dalai Lama debacle.....

      Henk - 2011-10-06 20:56

LOL Maybe the ANC should just keep quiet and not argue about subjects they care squat about (or know about)

      Vlooi - 2011-10-06 21:32

I don't agree with Max, calling this bunch of MOTHERF*CKERS maaifoedies .....

      Pigscanfly - 2011-10-06 22:03

      The problem she is what?

      Softy - 2011-10-06 22:34

The Anc have become a bunch of lying, thieving corrupt criminals.....what Max has said pales into insignificance when you look at their CRIMES.

      Nicolai - 2011-10-06 22:50

Protests in USA and Europe reaching SA shores!! Yay! https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=170914459657778

      kilo39 - 2011-10-07 05:25

I personally think Max is being too kind....he should call them what they really are really equitable with namely.... 'dog shaggers'! That they (ANC) keep on and on contradicting themselves is confirmation that as a unit they function at the level of 'stupid'.

      Frankly_Every1 - 2011-10-07 17:50

ahhhh So its ok for them to sing kill the whites but its not ok to say mother f*&^*r? Seriously why do you guys even put up with this crap. Take your skills and your taxes to a better country man.

  • GetitRight - 2011-10-06 20:38

    Yes...Julle Maaifoedies...hy is reg

  • Iridescent - 2011-10-06 20:39

    laugh my "maaifoedie" a$$ off.

  • Kate - 2011-10-06 20:40

This "is" a rhetoical question !! We all know it is true. What are the ANC on Face Book for? Do they not have jobs to do?

      Levett - 2011-10-06 22:04

The ANC is more concerned about them losing political ground than doing their job that they going to lose within the next year. Would'nt you then also be on FB all day?

  • observing - 2011-10-06 20:41

    Ha-ha!!!

  • Pollenated - 2011-10-06 20:41

    They're arrogant Max... very arrogant.

      Hangmann - 2011-10-06 22:40

Hey Max, no need to apollogise to this South African. ANC, you're a disgarce.

  • Anton - 2011-10-06 20:41

Rather do something productive and run our country, you bunch of idiotic maaifoedies!

  • darkwing - 2011-10-06 20:41

You bloody idiots. The word 'maaifoedie' is completely acceptable even when you're talking to a cleric. If you knew more about your minority citizens you would know this. You are just making yourself look more and more like the troubled party you are.

      POLLENYS - 2011-10-06 21:37

"Maaifoedie" according to the Handboek van die Afrikaanse Taal (HAT) is "vullis, skurk." Which translates as piece of rubbish, thief.

  • craigtjames - 2011-10-06 20:41

Kill the boer, kill the farmer - but DO NOT CALL US MAAIFOEDIES!!! We know we sometimes take yourfoodies and turn it into maaifoedies, but do not talk about it. And sometimes we take your cellphone as well, o, and also your tax money. Haha. Spend your time creating jobs and stop worrying about silly name calling.

  • GT - 2011-10-06 20:43

The great thing about slander law is that you cannot slander or offend the government in South Africa. IT SAYS SO IN THE LAW!!! Blerrie Maaifoedies. or in words of Saartjie Baartman... Julle Naaiers! It is amazing that the government has no time to to process visas, but has plenty of time to read FACEBOOK posts. At least we know what all those SAHARA computers are being used for.

  • Andrew - 2011-10-06 20:45

Dear ANC its the same as kill the boer song so what's wrong know, oh sorry you like to throw stone but when people throw them back you run home crying,

  • Rev. H-Cubed - 2011-10-06 20:49

Max, the answer is, regrettably, "Yes". The ANC has in fact lost its mind, and they do believe that all citizens are imbeciles. They have endeavoured to ensure imbecility through diligent mismanagement of education. They have become the very abomination they once opposed. The struggle for democracy does indeed continue.

      craigtjames - 2011-10-06 21:14

I do not believe they are losing their minds - you need one to lose one. And I firmly believe they are indeed completely clueless as to the intellectual abilities of the people of South Africa. I personally would be very disturbed if I am fully aware of the fact that my supporters are uneducated people whom I can manipulate as I please. But then again, I am not a politician.

      TaniaSandraSteyn - 2011-10-06 21:22

Maaifoedies? Ancient, ancient language to insult in a VERY subtle way. Dubula ama/ibhunu is an everday reality. Please kindly go and fiddle with your own protuberances, and let the Country run itself. That's what we have been doing anyway. You should all resign as a matter of principle, like the NP. Did you think the 'proteliarat' will keep quiet forver?

      marcan - 2011-10-07 00:33

@ Ouma Steyn,Being a proletarian or part of the elite, please know to spell English.

  • PlayOn - 2011-10-06 20:50

Does this mean one must use expletives- if that is really what this was - to get a response out of the ANC on issues? Whenever one wants to ask something in a polite way, the response is simply silence. So if the only way to get the ANC to respond on all the issues they choose to remain silent on, by all means - let's all start swearing at them!

  • R.Suppards - 2011-10-06 20:51

Is the ANC,the party of Madiba, now going to be known as the AMC,after the Dalai Lama debacle. Apologies to the kitchenware company.

  • Lacri - 2011-10-06 20:52

"abhorable"? Don't use more syllables than you can spell.

      Phaedioux - 2011-10-06 21:26

The word should actually be 'abhorrent'!

      crackerr - 2011-10-06 21:39

@ Phaedioux I see my comments on this subject are really getting a massive thumbs down. I will accept your opinion and shut up if you think I should. Max gave the ANC and other detractors from the truth that opportunity to once again find that lekker escape route. Anyway, you know what I'm saying. What is your verdict? I think Max Du Preez should have kept his mouth shut.

  • Vela Stardust - 2011-10-06 20:53

Thanks to Max du Preez and the ANCYL-KZN, I have learnt 2 very interesting new South African words which both describe the ANC in the light of the Dalai Lama debacle. The first word is 'maaifoedies' and the second is 'isibhanxa' meaning idiot of fool in Xhoza. Sometimes it's just down right fun living in this country.

  • Oompie - 2011-10-06 20:55

Max, dis tyd dat die gewese Weeklikse Vryblad en Weakly Male afgestof word en daar weer begin word om die regering se snorbaarde te trek. Doepa Neethling en Klapmus Malan is nie meer daar om te lieg en bedrieg nie.

  • k_hallawaya - 2011-10-06 21:05

.....Jackson "Daniels" Mthembu needs to divert the attention from the Dalai Lama issue and the way that Zuma and Motlanthe and the rest of the ANC show their image of sheer stupidity in handling the issue like perfect idiots to the rest of the world........Master China could be demanding to the ANC cadres to do something to quell the fire they started........

  • Carl - 2011-10-06 21:08

    anc...maaifoedies

  • Nzx - 2011-10-06 21:08

  • Alice - 2011-10-06 21:41

I think the Boer's would prefer to be called mother-f*kers then being threatened with a bullet. Hypocrites

  • Totman - 2011-10-06 21:41

As far as I know can the meaning be the same but the expression is not as hard. It is like saying" moer hulle" instead of saying "f@#k hulle". Maybe I understood the word wrong my whole life so far. The point is that the ANC sits with a disgruntled population from both sides and they do not know how to handle it. They sits with a catch 22. They can't discipline people without getting burn themselves, but need to satisfy people. They now rather pick on small heads showing instead of purifying all. It is impossible to be the bank manager, bank robber and the cop. The leaches/beneficiaries became too many while the reason for being in power get neglected. The tax payer do not see the full benefit for their payments. Even the excuse that the poor gets it does not reflect. The poor again thinks that the taxpayer/richer people do not want to share and can't understand why the gov. can't get more money from them. The gov. realize(so far) that he can't suck more blood from the ones that are better off because they can bleed the supplier dead. Even the stubborn ANC member realize it and is currently sit between defending the party or admit the parties failure. As proof in our history, between the PF and NP, changes happen slowly. In this case we all hope common sense will come fast. The time has come that other parties should overcome differences join and convince "outside" people that what they fought for is not getting honored anymore. THE OLD ANC IS DEAD!!!!!!!

      Totman - 2011-10-06 21:45

If any of you pick it up: sorry for the copy and paste. I add it to the previous article, but that seems to moved out of the main headings.

  • Wichard Kemp - 2011-10-06 21:45

''adding that he owes all South Africans an apology.'' I don't need an apology ! ANC strongly believes that they are above the law and people !

      v3 - 2011-10-06 22:12

Max, if you do apologise for calling a spade a spade, you needn't include me. Well said. Poor Julius isiBhanxa: he got such a shock, he had to be hospitalised. The real issue is that the ANC's maaifoedism is meant to be a state secret -that's why they need the Gag Law.

      Mandla - 2011-10-06 22:18

v3 you will be gaged if your reporting is not up to standard.

  • Digger - 2011-10-06 21:49

As a rule I think all public representatives should show restraint and be held accountable for what they say. I do think he was out of line and should apologize, just as the shoot the boer is totally out of line. Even worst is he stooped to their uneducated level and use such language….he simply could have said, “The ANC are a bunch of narrow-minded, hypocritical, imbeciles”.

  • Levett - 2011-10-06 21:51

The ANC must see the word maaifoedie "in context" and should "calm down". It is their sins of the BEE policy that drives people to curse them and they should apologise to the white people of SA.

  • Jubes - 2011-10-06 21:52

Of course he meant to call the ANC "motherf%*^ers" - who wouldnt!!

      Chris - 2011-10-07 06:42

Should that not read "every one is"?

  • Wayne - 2011-10-06 21:52

Oh get a grip ANC... it's not the first time... and it's unlikely it'll be the last... until you cleanup your act and start doing the job you were elected to do... but it is so enligtening to see the the support wavering from those who previously held the ANC in such high esteem... damn funny how that old cookie keeps crumbling hey !!!

  • Malcolm - 2011-10-06 21:55

One thing the ACN has got right is the bulk of the populultion are complete imbeciles. Who else but a complete imbecile would keep voting for them.

  • Natsumi - 2011-10-06 21:59

Wow ... they have lots of time to read Facebook... but apparently no time to fill out Visa's for a Nobel Peace Price winner...

      Totman - 2011-10-06 22:05

      Nice touch.:)

  • SoftAnarchis - 2011-10-06 22:00

Hey you ANC maaifoedies, you getting bliksemed on so many fronts, you don't know where to duck anymore. Bwhaaaahahahaha. The under currents are so far advanced not even the most charismatic leader in the world would not be able to save the ANC anymore. What goes around comes around you maaifoedies. Enjoy the ride while it lasts.

Friends, South Africans, countrymen, lend me your ears; I come to bury the ANC, certainly not to praise them. The evil they do lives amongst themselves; The good they do is more so associated with corruption for their own good and cause, all the while denying the impoverished that they so-called care for; So let it be with them. The noble South African hath told the ANC it is somewhat rather dismal failure: If it were otherwise, it would have been a brilliant success for democracy. For we, South Africans are honourable people; and they that they are, are all are dishonourable persons - Come I to speak at the ANC's funeral. They were my friend, faithful and just to me: But we say they was just to ambitious; And we remain the honorable people, but will watch at the them that wither and die.. ungracefully.
