Mayor racks up 1000s of kilometres

2013-01-29 13:02

Bloemfontein - Municipal finance records show a Free State mayor travels between 450km and 1 000km a day, it was reported on Tuesday.

The Volksblad newspaper reported that Xhariep district mayor Mongi Ntwanambi cost taxpayers nearly R480 008 in petrol, maintenance, licensing, tracking, and repairs for his Mercedes-Benz, and car hire between January and October last year.

This was more than half the price of the vehicle in 2010.

According to the newspaper, at a conservative petrol price of R11.37 a litre and fuel consumption of eight kilometres a litre, Ntwanambi would have to have travelled on average 1007km a day to arrive at the R42 964 he claimed to have spent on petrol in April alone.

He spent the least on fuel in July, at R4 637, when his vehicle was in for repairs, which cost the municipality more than R60 000.

The newspaper reported that Ntwanambi provided his vehicle costs as part of a motivation for the district council to buy him a new car.

The Democratic Alliance in the Free State said the figures were absurd and asked the Auditor General to investigate.

The Volksblad reported the municipality refused to answer questions about the matter.

      fussed.anderson - 2013-01-29 14:00

To travel 1000km per day, when does he get time to work?????

      vambozha.mutemi.9 - 2013-01-29 14:24

He was even driving to Nklandla every Friday

      andre.vandeventer.16 - 2013-01-29 14:24

In the pre 1994 era mayors drove their own private cars for everyday use, even to work and back home. They only had the benefit of the mayoral car on official mayoral duties when they also wore the mayoral chain! Mayors were also people of good standing and earned their salaries as normal citizens as teachers, doctors, or whatever occupation they filled. mayors were in service of their community and not other way round like today. This new system breeds corruption and it stinks!

      travis.vermaak - 2013-01-29 14:31

@Fredster69 Yip, they continually vote ANC, and then spend the next four years striking cause of lack of service delivery, while their fatcat idols sit laughing, driving their R1m Mercs on their R500m roads, to their R250m compounds. No logic at all!

      israel.maseko.5 - 2013-01-29 14:34

You are definately correct Erna, is not possible for him to travel such a distance a day, his family is using his petrol card to fill up their cars or esle he is running a transport business whereby he uses his card to fill up petrol.I am now convinced that we as blacks we are overdoing it. in our current gorvenment, from R10, a black perosn will use R9 for his benefit. In the old gorvenment, from R10, a white person will use R1 for his benefit. That is why corruption wa not fully noticed during the old government.

      konstabel.koekemoer - 2013-01-29 14:54

This is why most ANC run municipalities are bankrupt. Muzi's comment is very accurate ... corruption is definately not unique to Africa but it seems that many African leader are so greedy that they steal everything and totally destoy the organisations they are supposed to be running. Nothing will change until the majority of voters realize this and stop supporting these criminals.

      oarabile.tlhale - 2013-01-29 14:57

andre. vandeventer its no use comparing this to the good old apartheid days. I cant relate to that, so ur argument is one sided. Those heros of yours committed such horrible criminal acts against humanity and its disgusting that someone still longs for the cruel past. This mayor should be investigated for corruption and fraud, nothing else. So dont come bragg to us about how well the aparheid system served u

      jerry.medina.756 - 2013-01-29 15:12

Another Cadre milking the system. Wait till he have a disagreement with Jacob Zuma then the Hawks,SARS,NPA will descend on him. Banana republic

      heathway.master - 2013-01-29 16:37

Just shows you what an absolute peasant the mayor is. Probably grade 1 education, as he falsified his petrol claim so much, that the consumption stated was beyond the realms of possibility. In any other Company he would have immediately been fired for fraud and corruption, and forced to pay back all he swindled. In this case he will be allowed to carry on swindling money from the Municipality continuously, just changing the way he does it each month. Why should he care a damn if he is caught again, same simple slap on the wrist and business as usual. This country appears to contain an almost entire culture, devoid of any honesty, integrity or work ethic. Just an attitude of SUPER ENTITLEMENT based on skin colour alone.

      bullet.proof.9400 - 2013-01-29 17:12

Have these people have no shame, have they no conscience, is their culture one of theft after theft after theft. Do they think they can just do what they want? It hard to believe that this country we live in tolerates this theft and corruption. Daily there are reports of mismanagement by these AA thieves. We have a very backward and stupid population that vote for these criminals time and time again. You have to be very, very thick to vote for these criminals and live in poverty for them, how stupid.

      Diversitas - 2013-01-30 00:36

We have shameless thieves running the country. Utterly blinded by the delusion of self importance. No integrity, no shame, no accountability. Its one of those things which make one shout and scream in frustration, and then burst out a sad laugh thinking about how NO-ONE holds them accountable as clearly we cant even begin to expect them to understand the consequences of their actions!

      mlungisi.botha - 2013-01-30 09:58

'Cmon guys give him a break! He could have had a great big hole the size of my fist in his fuel tank or he's the hardest working mayor in SA!

      BatRMan959 - 2013-01-30 10:00

Its probably just 100km's per day... But when you add the KM's of the 9 other cars in his convoy it comes to 1000kms per day....

      heathway.master - 2013-01-29 21:16

Jaap, we have a complete culture based on criminal tendencies. In every sphere of Government, Municipalities and quasi-statals, crime and dishonesty pays very handsomely. In my mind this is the very reason that damnation Zuma was re-elected. He is a prime mover of criminality and corruption being the order of the day. He has to be the least respected SA Statesman of all time, yet his ilk thrive and prosper in the new SA. I would love to have a survey on how many THINKING South Africans are not totally humiliated and embarrassed in having this piece of rubbish sitting at the top of the pile.

Got to agree with you MSG. Everyday and all day when we open News 24, it's about some rotten corrupt Government Official or a corrupt Law Officer, tenders in question and the Nkandla debarcle. This is clearly the state of the nation,it's scary stuff...Unlike any other news paper in the World where they are more concerned about the welfare of Society and the future of natural resources like where we going to get our water from.

  • pws69 - 2013-01-29 13:24

If he averaged 1000km a day, that would entail 12 hours of driving PER DAY, EVERY DAY. When did he do his work? The cANCer are silent on this but the ANC had SOOOOO much to say when a DA MP racked less than half of this, and it was justified and found to be correct by an independent panel. ANC double standards and dishonesty at work once again. Vote DA for an honest and competent government in 2014.

So, a municipality of 136,000 people, of which only about 40,000 are of working age. Considering its an agricultural district, let's assume (generously), that only 20% are tax payers. 8000 people paying tax. So, his car costs R815,000.00. Annual fuel bill is roughly R365,000.00 Insurance and maintenance - add another R150,000.00 That's roughly R1,330mil for his one vehicle. Now add salary, expenses and then the cost of running the municipality and the district.... Very easy to see how the gravy train doesn't stop for service delivery and why the public are up in arms! And...34,000 votes went to the ANC - what MUGS!

What a waste of skin. Hunter gatherer mentality. Just following the example set by his mentor the corrupt old pres.

In the old gorvenment, from R10, a white person will use R1 for his benefit. That is why corruption wa not fully noticed during the old government.
