Johannesburg - The National Development Plan (NDP) will turn around South Africa's economy, African National Congress chairperson Baleka Mbete said.

Speaking at the uThungulu district municipality social cohesion summit in Richards Bay on Friday, Mbete said South Africa was in need of radical economic transformation to right the wrongs of the past.

“When the colonisers came they were few, but they took most of the land for themselves. Economic activity was therefore racially biased when the few conducted economic activity on the majority of the land and entrenched racial patterns of possession," Mbete said.

"This was a deliberate strategy executed ruthlessly over the years by the colonisers. We are finally in the past 21 years only beginning to address this. Why are we poor when our land is so rich? We need to deracialise the economy. How will we achieve that? The NDP will be the turnaround strategy, it is the real way forward."

She said the NDP had been endorsed by all political parties in Parliament as "the blueprint for the next 15 years to turn this around".

"The vision and objective of the NDP is to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality and unemployment by 2030," Mbete said.

"This vision statement requires that South Africans be united in growing an inclusive economy, building a capable and developmental state with a skilled workforce."
