Durban - KZN Safety MEC Willies Mchunu has condemned the "murder spree" in Durban which left eight people dead in the space of an hour.

Three people were gunned down and several others were injured in a shootout at a city centre taxi rank, followed shortly by a mass murder in KwaMashu in which five people were killed.

According to a statement issued by Mchunu, police raided the taxi rank in the wake of the shooting and confiscated more than 30 firearms.

Reacting to the two incidents, MEC Mchunu expressed shock at the spate of killings, and sent a message of condolence to the families of the victims.

"We condemn these senseless and cold-blooded murders in the strongest terms possible. This is unacceptable and poses a serious threat to the generally peaceful province of KwaZulu-Natal.

"We have now ordered all the law enforcement agencies, working in collaboration, to leave no stone unturned as they do their utmost best to bring to justice the perpetrators of these abominable acts," said Mchunu.

He appealed for calm and urged anyone with information about the killings to work with the police.
