Bloemfontein - A Free State mechanic who chased after four armed robbers and helped to get one of them arrested has been dubbed “the mechanic with a gun”.

Volksblad reported that David van der Berg, 30, didn’t think twice when he saw some men in a bakkie speed past him and his cousin Sias, 24.

“We didn’t know the men were robbers or armed. We just knew something was wrong and chased after them,” said Van der Berg.

The men had just robbed a nearby store and were speeding away in a stolen bakkie.

Van den Berg always carries a 9mm pistol and has helped arrest several criminals. He has also saved his own life twice.

The robbers jumped out of the vehicle in a field and ran off. Van den Berg fired warning shots and one man fell down.

Van der Berg’s father arrived on the scene shortly afterwards and cuffed the robber.

"The only mistake the robbers made, was to speed past the Van der Bergs. Too many people say ‘sorry, we don’t want to get involved’. We have to defend the country ourselves and protect it. It is a criminal’s paradise. The police are helpless,” said Charl van der Berg.
