Media await Pistorius at court

2013-02-15 08:19

Johannesburg - A large media contingent was waiting at the back entrance to the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Friday morning in the hope of seeing paralympian Oscar Pistorius.

He was expected to appear in court on a charge of murder.

His model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was shot dead at his home in the Silver Woods country estate, in Pretoria, on Thursday.

Pistorius's lawyer Kenny Oldwage said on Thursday the athlete would apply for bail. Pistorius spent Thursday night in a holding cell at the Boschkop police station.

Police said Pistorius's application for bail would be opposed.

Initial reports about the shooting suggested it was a case of mistaken identity, and that the gunman had thought Steenkamp was a burglar.

However, the police said this information had not come from them.

On Thursday morning police escorted Pistorius from his home to the Boschkop police station. He was then taken to the Mamelodi Day Clinic for blood and other tests, which police said were routine in such cases.

He was taken back to the police station, where he was escorted to a holding cell.

Beeld insists that they got that information from a police captain.

      lance.robile - 2013-02-15 08:30

In an unofficial manner, Printing what constable Mthembu told you is no way of reporting. There are people who authorized to talk to the media.

      BrainCandyCPT - 2013-02-15 08:48

Don't shoot the messenger! Was jussayin' what I'd read. Zapiro was spot on today about how much we 'know':

      preshen.govender.3910 - 2013-02-15 09:17

She didn't notice Oscar sneaking up behind her. It was the silence of the limbs.

      BrainCandyCPT - 2013-02-15 09:18

I rest my case: "Beeld: that the shooting was an accident, had come from Captain Sarah Mcira, who released the information to their journalist around 8am"

  • john.botges - 2013-02-15 08:24

I hope the truth comes out. Why no mention of the deceased's grieving parents? They are the ones that are suffereing right now. Forget Oscar. He pulled the trigger

      jaco.d.villiers.1 - 2013-02-15 08:42

I am astonished how some people are feeling so sorry for him. Focussing on him. Fact is, he has always been a hothead, been in trouble before for domestic abuse and assualt. Sure he did well on the athletic field but this does not make you above the law. There are still allot to come to light, but right now this smells like cold blooded murder.

  • susan.paul.330 - 2013-02-15 08:24

I only hope the truth be told..

  • kido.chapatsotseuoa - 2013-02-15 08:25

Ppl r making jokes and a woman has lost her life, parents hav lost a daughter, Its not a joke..

  • emm.emm.58 - 2013-02-15 08:27

Something smells very fishy with this whole case

  • CraigJoseph - 2013-02-15 08:28

If he did mistake his girlfriend for a burglar, his punishment will be her death on his conscience for the rest of his life which is punishment enough. If he meant to kill her though, he's just as bad as every other criminal in South Africa, if not worse!

      Rehan.Harmse - 2013-02-15 09:24

One mistake he made is to think that the "burglar" idea will fix it all, but if you shoot a burglar in your house one warning shot and one at the burglar....if he is not running away, you might get away with it, but to shoot someone 4 times is murder, burglar or not. I feel so sorry for the Father and Mother that lost their daughter and I hope that the truth comes out.

  • Hemlock - 2013-02-15 08:29

Sad and tragic loss of life. RIP Reeva, your life was cut short far too soon. Condolences to family and loved ones. My heart goes out to the Steenkamp family and the Pistorius family.

  • Cliff3000 - 2013-02-15 08:30

What are all these useless comments about? Nobody knows what really happened. Why don't you just wait until then?

      lance.robile - 2013-02-15 08:48

      Dimple Motau - 2013-02-15 08:51

I totally agree with you Cliff, what happened to Innocent until proven guilty?

      graham.adler.3 - 2013-02-15 09:35

      Well said.

  • ohbizz.chabata - 2013-02-15 08:31

It is distasteful to make jokes about such things but it happens all the time when a popular personality is the perpetrator. In our parts, the last guy that went through such was Jub Jub but without a doubt a lot more people have been charged with murder since him. That's just the way of the world I guess

  • mve.sishi - 2013-02-15 08:35

Many concerned about Oscar Pistorius - but what about his slain partner?

  • christopher.laurenz.5 - 2013-02-15 08:35

He lives in a safe secure complex, he shoots the "intruder" in the HEAD, his neighbours hear arguments coming from their house, He has a machine gun by his window, this guys a bit messed up I think and a murderer. Sad for the loss of another human.RIP

  • zed.max.52 - 2013-02-15 08:35

Sometimes I wonder why us human beings lose our mind in a terrible way like this. After all the inspiration, success, world worshipping all the legacy just get wiped within seconds. Then what are we on this earth, where are we heading? Then who is who in this world? Does this mean we need another world?

  • kevin.paul.94695459 - 2013-02-15 08:36

#disrespect# and #heartbroken# and #totally disrespect# people I reckon the press as taken this too far because how can they give out details of were the man lives come on people of south africa why don't we let the people of justice do their thing totally gutted

  • brian.dureuck - 2013-02-15 08:36

what did she do out of the kitchen? any sane male would think its a burglar! ...

  • the.dindingues - 2013-02-15 08:37

  • rm.elegant.5 - 2013-02-15 08:38

Another "Oscar-winning" performance by the "Blade-Gunner"

  • susan.donnison - 2013-02-15 08:44

From what I have read about his love for guns, I would be very nervous if my daughter wanted to go out with someone like that but I am really praying that this is not another fallen 'hero'!

  • legend.otk - 2013-02-15 08:48

let God be the final Judge into this case. may her beloved soul rest in peace.

  • leonard.menge - 2013-02-15 08:48

      Hemlock - 2013-02-15 08:59

      brenda.yelvertonburns - 2013-02-15 10:23

Lol? Your comment is not funny, not original and speaks volumes about you.

  • rm.elegant.5 - 2013-02-15 08:59

    Oscar Pistolius

  • Chantelle Michael - 2013-02-15 08:59

    And the oscar goes to...jail

  • Robert - 2013-02-15 09:06

Look, I hope it was mistaken identity, for Oscar is a good bloke. Sure he doesn't sleep with his blades I'd also be armed to defend myself. Tragic none the less and condolences to the families.

  • rm.elegant.5 - 2013-02-15 09:15

Nike 2011 advert described Pistol-ius as a "Bullet in the Chamber" and hearing that he shot her through the bathroom, how fitting....Chamber - Bathroom....Oscar - Bullet

      rodney.louis.7 - 2013-02-15 10:27

i wonder if he will be allowed to take his blades to prison / he wil definitely need them

  • salvador - 2013-02-15 09:16

It seems he has a bit of a history. Young women should be careful with whom they hook up. No matter how charming or glamourous, if there is a hint of untoward behaviour, they should run a mile. May Reeva's tragic death serve as a wake up call.

  • Christopher Naidoo - 2013-02-15 09:20

its a gated estate .The comings and goings are monitored by security.

  • viljoen.cobus - 2013-02-15 09:29

Some very insensitive comments, have shame on yourselves for typing such words on a very heart breaking matter. A girl lost her life, an hero is being accused of murder. Making jokes and senseless remarks does not make you a big shot. Please people.....have a heart. This is the man we all cheered for in the olympics, yes its shocking, but making jokes of him is cruel. And the girl who lost her life, was an upcoming superstar/super model. My heart is broken for both families. This is a sad time in SA history........sad...

      rm.elegant.5 - 2013-02-15 11:58

a "hero" you say?? If that were a Black athlete you'd all be screaming murder, no bail etc and blaming the ANC

  • rodney.louis.7 - 2013-02-15 10:23

im sure oscar was high on some sort of drug .. that's the only logical reason why he killed her

  • YvetteT1968 - 2013-02-15 11:42

Bail really!!!! He should never see the outside world again!!! Unbelievable!!!!

  • Nomthandazo Nomthy Manana - 2013-02-16 07:44

This is just nonsense,if it was a black athlete no one would be having sympathy for the guy. all will b screaming murder, cruel etc. Oscar must just come out with the truth. we all know he is lying to our faces to cover his white ass
