IN a grand rooftop party, Msunduzi mayor Chris Ndlela and Mediclinic CEO of Southern Africa Kooert Pretorius officially opened the new and renovated Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday.

The R207 million total upgrade project was completed in April this year and has 96 beds, two operating theatres, a state-of-the-art catheterisation lab, three-storey parking deck and 15 consulting rooms added to the Pietermaritzburg hospital.

Pietermaritzburg Mediclinic is the seventh biggest contributor to the hospital group with a R450 million turnover a year.

“It has been 26 years since the hospital opened it’s doors and 20 years since Mediclinic took over. We are grateful for those who have criticised us as they have pushed us to ensure this metamorphosis takes place,” said hospital doctor Mohammed Essa.

The Payn Street hospital now has 237 beds and seven operating theatres in total.

Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg treats patients from a wide area including Kokstad, Matatiele, Richmond, Ixopo, Newcastle, Vryheid, the Drakensberg and the wider KZN Midlands.
