Men caught with illegal firearms

East London - Five men were arrested in Flagstaff and Lusikisiki after Eastern Cape police caught them with illegal firearms and ammunition on Wednesday.

The first three were arrested in Mzenge Village in Flagstaff after police, on a crime combating operation in the area, caught them with three rifles and ammunition, Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said.

The trio was expected to appear in the Flagstaff Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Two other men were arrested about 15km away in Bodwini Village in Lusikisiki after being caught with a 9mm pistol with 10 rounds of ammunition.

"Serial numbers were filed off. We arrested both because no one admitted to owning the firearm."

They were expected to appear in the Lusikisiki Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Meanwhile, seven people were arrested in Flagstaff for drunk driving between 01:00 and 06:00 on Wednesday morning. They would appear in the Flagstaff Magistrate's Court.
