Johannesburg - Two men were each sentenced in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court to two life imprisonment terms for murder and 15 years for robbery, police said on Friday.

Captain Thulani Zwane said Malusi Buthelezi, 30, and Mbongiseni Mashazi, 27, were sentenced on Thursday.

Tavern owner Petros Ndlovu, 69, and security guard Sphamandla Ngcobo, 33, were shot dead at the Phangode Tavern in Nongoma on June 22 last year, after five men entered the tavern and held Ndlovu and his employees at gunpoint.

Ndlovu resisted and was shot. Before dying he drew his own gun and shot Mashazi in the back.
Ngcobo, who was outside, entered the tavern and was shot dead. The five stole R13 500.

The next day police received information about a man admitted to Nkonjeni Hospital with a bullet wound in his back.

After investigating, Mashazi was arrested. Two more arrests followed. One suspect, Zamokwakhe Martin Buthelezi, was granted bail, but was later killed in Johannesburg.
