Johannesburg - Four men believed to be linked to a contraband cigarette syndicate were arrested in Midrand and Centurion, the Hawks said on Wednesday.

The arrests followed a raid on a storage facility in Modderfontein, Ekurhuleni, on Tuesday where cigarettes worth R4m were confiscated, spokesperson Captain Paul Ramaloko said.

"We believe we have broken the back of a massive counterfeit syndicate. The raid also netted 8 000 litres of ethanol worth half-a-million rands, used to produce illegal alcohol."

The men, aged between 40 and 50, were expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Thursday to face charges relating to the contravention of the Tobacco Product Act.

Drinking and smoking is a “sin”, but raping, murdering and fraud is not – cause you don’t get taxed for it……….. weird world we live in.

We lose billions in unpayed taxes due to counterfeit cigarettes. That means less tax for JZ to steal. That means he can only afford a R200million shack/kraal/compound. Support JZ and buy real cigarettes. Its the right thing to do
