Johannesburg - Two men were shot dead, and two police officers stabbed and wounded in separate incidents in Gauteng on Thursday afternoon, police said.

Patrolling police in Orlando, Soweto, stopped and tried to search a man reported to have dagga in his possession, Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said.

"When the reservist tried to search the suspect, the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed the member in the chest."

The officer fired a shot as he fell on the ground. The man died and the reservist was taken to a local hospital for treatment, Mogale said

In Akasia, Pretoria, police were trying to arrest a man who allegedly stabbed and wounded another man on Tuesday, she said.

"When police tried to cuff the suspect... [he] pulled out a knife and stabbed the member twice."
Mogale said the stabbed officer retaliated by firing shots, which killed the man.

They say never take a knife to a gun battle. Well done SAPS two less low lifes to worry about.

Well the Reservist and the policeman were stabbed. That would indicate that proper procedures and care when apprehending a suspect were not followed. I hope both of them did not sustain any long-term or permanent damage.

I stand to be corrected if I am wrong. I thought it was part of the uniform and standard procedure for police officers to use their bullet proof vests. More so if they are on patrol. The officers must really thank GOD that it was just a knife (I'm not saying its not dangerous) but had it been a gun then circumstances would have been far worse. A bit negligent don't you think so?

SAPS are forced to wear Made-in-ZA bullet-proof vests which were last revised in the 1970's. They weigh almost 20kgs more than the international norm. 'Beat cops' are not req'd to wear kevlar and are usually only for riot and tactical units. A policeman ought to be trained in the proper restraint and search of a perpetrator so that they are not caught out

Training Training and more training needed and this would not happen

I could not agree more! SAPS do not practice and train enough for situations like this

feel sorry for the reserve cop.more training for reservist is required.i believe that the suspect must be in an off balance position when being searched(legs apart & arms raised).never think that the suspect is polite.always have a back up.
