2012-04-27 18:00

Johannesburg - A man has been arrested for raping a 19-year-old mentally challenged woman in Butterworth, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.

He was apprehended on Thursday, Captain Jackson Manatha said.

The 26-year-old man went to the woman's homestead on Tuesday and convinced her to go with him to his home.

"It is alleged [that] he raped the woman for the duration of the night and released her on Wednesday morning," said Manatha.

She later informed her relatives, and they alerted authorities.

He is due to appear in the Butterworth Magistrate's Court on Monday.

What is it with people raping the mentally handicapped? There should be special jail-time for those sadistic cowards!!

      Jack - 2012-04-27 18:31

Yawn...why is this making news? We all know this happens all the time. This is just their way of life.

  • fdalana - 2012-04-27 18:27

not again!!!!!necklacing is the only solution.

  • billidp - 2012-04-27 18:44

WTF???? Is raping the mentally handicapped now the national sport in SOUth Africa or what??? CHEMICAL CASTRASTION IS CALLED FOR FOR ALL RAPISTS!!!!

  • carpejugulim - 2012-04-27 18:45

Another candidate for euthanasia that calls himself a man. Forget about necklacing and castration as they are both far too quick a punishment, live with the fact that we will never get the death penalty back and think about a years course of estrogen for the suspect, that will remove every last vestige of testosterone and "manliness", he will grow breasts, his voice will go higher and he will become more feminine ... make an awesome wyfie for someone in prison ... the wheel turns

lol now thats funny but sounds like a gud idea

What l want to know is what does the law say about having a romantic relationship with a mentally challenged person. Do these people have a right to love. If they have, who can prove whether the mentally challenged person was raped or there was an existing relationship.

      michelle.kirsten - 2012-04-27 19:14

The last I heard (depending, I guess, on the severity of the mental challenge) people with mental disabilities are classed in the same way as minors, ie. unable to give informed consent and therefore vulnerable. It seems highly unlikely that a (for want of a better word) normal person would have much romantic interest in a mentally challenged individual, therefore such relationships seem predatory in nature in the same way a 35 year old man and a 14 year old don't really have an equal standing in a relationship.

      Cornelius - 2012-04-27 19:27

@michelle, thanx for the input. But what about those men and women in a marriage but mentally challenged? Does this mean their partners are raping them each tym they sleep with them. This is becoz rape can either take place between people with relationship or without relationship

      James - 2012-04-27 19:30

There are always a person like u to make sense out of this nonsense.that's why it keeps on May have just given this coward a defense in court.he could say she's his girlfriend.why did she report it?

      Cornelius - 2012-04-27 19:42

@ James, don't be emotional l am just trying to understand the legal standing of the issue. Emotions don't win cases in a court. It is about what the law says. A lot of immoral criminals are out of jail becoz of what the law say. This is the truth!

      Grace - 2012-04-27 20:37

Conelius... Sounds to me like you trying to justify something??? Are you a rapist too?

  • Vandross - 2012-04-27 18:50

South Africa is really in deep turmoil right now you'd better believe me. Many people defend crime by saying that the statistics of crime are similar in countries where death penalty is there and where it isn't

  • lskosana3 - 2012-04-27 18:54

Wow this is fast becoming some sick trend. Parents of boys need to take great care in how they raise them, a man doesn't just turn into a murderous rapist overnight.

      Liz - 2012-04-27 19:00

No, lskosana3, sadly the abuse of mentally challenged women has been around for a very long time - what is new is it being reported in the media. I agree with you that parents need to pay attention to how they raise their sons - however many children are not raised by their parents and father's especially are absent.

      Muhammed - 2012-04-27 19:58

Agreed. What we see and hear on the television and what we read it sometimes tempting and this causes us to experiment and try it for ourselves. So we must be alert as to what the media projects as this has an impact on our behaviour.

      lskosana3 - 2012-04-28 05:17

True Liz. Just saying that attitudes of parents, especially most blacks, need to change

  • Gift - 2012-04-27 18:55

Watch the movie \law abiding citizen\ to see the wright punishment for this bastard!

      Ricky Naidoo - 2012-04-27 19:00

Exactly, that would be a great example to set for these ruthless animals.

  • Honjiswa Luvalo - 2012-04-27 18:59

These cowards should stop doing this,,,,,sies maan!

  • Muhammed - 2012-04-27 19:01

What kind of a sick society are we living in today?? This is the second such case in a weeks time. It is a potent sign of our moral degradation. An intelligent person is one who takes heed of what is happening in their environment.

  • Elizabeth Lee - 2012-04-27 19:13

why are all these mentally ill ppl being raped? a new tradition maybe, like raping a virgin cures aids? these ppl are sick and should be put to death.

  • Ntombikayise - 2012-04-27 19:14

Rapist should go to jail. Those people should be away from the community.

  • Olebogeng - 2012-04-27 19:45

Don't arrest a rapist is waste of time, just handover him to the PEOPLE's JUSTICE. We'll give them good lessons.

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-04-27 20:39

Bring the oke to me i will make an example of him.

  • Grace - 2012-04-27 20:43

This is becoming a trend... 'have you raped a retard today?'. Castrate them ALL! There NO excuses - not bipolar, bad childhood, under age, drugs, alcohol.... Come on SA those excuses are as OLD as flipping 'the eartH is flat'. Time to face the consequences

  • Melanie - 2012-04-27 20:54

what a disgrace...are some men of these days so horny to bonk anything without thinking twice. Shame

  • simon.mohoalali - 2012-04-27 21:17

It is what happen when you take God out of everything people now they are being overwhelmed by their flesh desire and they indulge in wrong doing, not that they are not aware what they are doing is wrong but they can't help it, the only thing that can solve this problem is true religion which is Christianity because it has power to keep flesh indulgence to hold

  • Lesego - 2012-04-27 21:40

Really South African now we are being so baberic aggg its so said to hear all this about mentally ill people, where are we going mar scared for my younger sisters out there

  • Elkita - 2012-04-27 22:34

    Like president like voter.

  • Louis - 2012-04-28 05:27

The only way to stop this from happening is to treat these 'people' as inhumanely as they treat their victims. Make an example out of them, then the rest will start doubting their actions.
