Johannesburg - A Tshwane metro police officer was killed when a minibus drove into him in central Pretoria on Tuesday, the metro police department said.

He was directing traffic at an intersection where a robot was broken, spokesperson Isaac Mahamba said.

"A Kombi bumped into him and he was rushed to hospital around 09:00. He passed on after 12:00."

Mahamba said a statement was taken from the driver at the scene and a case of culpable homicide opened.

"We are shocked about what happened because you wouldn't expect him to die while he was on duty," Mahamba said.

The department expressed its sadness and sent condolences to the officer's family and colleagues.
