Michelle Obama: You say 'yes, we can'

2011-06-22 11:32

Johannesburg - US First Lady Michelle Obama urged young Africans on Wednesday to fight for women's rights and battle the stigma of Aids, using her husband's "yes, we can" campaign slogan to motivate youth across the continent.

Obama is on her second solo trip abroad as first lady to promote issues such as education, health and wellness.

But her speech at Regina Mundi Church, which played a role in South Africa's anti-apartheid movement, touched on much harder topics: race, discrimination, democracy, and development.

Obama, who is travelling with her mother and two daughters, drew on the leaders of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa and the civil rights movement in the United States as an example for the younger generation to follow.

"It is because of them that we are able to gather here today...It is because of them that I stand before you as First Lady of the United States of America," she said to applause.

"That is the legacy of the independence generation, the freedom generation. And all of you - the young people of this continent - you are the heirs of that blood, sweat, sacrifice, and love."

Obama appeared visibly moved when the audience stood and sang an impromptu serenade as she approached the podium. Placing her hands over her heart, she thanked the crowd and seemed to choke back tears.

She spoke passionately about women's rights, saying the young leaders should ensure that women were no longer "second-class citizens" and that girls were educated in schools.

In this generation

"You can be the generation that stands up and says that violence against women in any form, in any place, including the home - especially the home - that isn't just a women's rights violation. It's a human rights violation," she said.

"You can be the generation that ends HIV/Aids in our time, the generation that fights not just the disease, but the stigma of the disease, the generation that teaches the world that HIV is fully preventable and treatable, and should never be a source of shame," she said to applause.

Obama was introduced by Graça Machel, Nelson Mandela's wife.

Obama and her family met Mandela at his home on Tuesday.

'Yes, we can'

Barack Obama is the first black US president, just as Mandela was the first black president of South Africa.

Mrs Obama used her husband's famous campaign slogan, which helped him win the 2008 presidential election, to urge the audience to follow through on the issues she addressed.

"If anyone ever tells you that you shouldn't or you can't, then I want you to say with one voice - the voice of a generation - you tell them, 'yes, we can'."

Reading all the hype over Mrs Obamas visit I am left wondering if she knows (or even cares) that white people also live in SA and have a history too?

      Goose - 2011-06-22 13:13

@Eric, I respectfully disagree. The US is a useful country to have on ones side. And I believe that having a visit from the 1st Lady at this exact moment in time is both a blessing, and not a coincidence. The US economic interest in South Africa is of sufficient magnitude, that talk of economically foolish practices such as nationalisation of mining assets and conversion of productive farm land to subsistence farm land will not go un-noticed, or un-challenged. South Africa has a very important strategic role to play in the development of Africa, and its relationship to the rest of the world as an extremely valuable source of industrial and mineral wealth. Not to mention the political value we hold in the way of (for now) being a beacon of democracy. Unfortunately people like Mr Melama and his followers are not intelligent enough to understand the power and value they are destroying. I can assure you, Michelle Obama, and in fact all black people who grow up in a civilised and ordered environment are as capable and intelligent as anyone else. It is not being black that leads one to pursue or support suicidal economic policies such as nationalisation of mines and agricultural land grabbing. It is the unfortunate consequence of being ‘African’ that some how leeds to such stupidity. Given the economic value of South Africa internationally, I believe that the 1st Ladies presence in our Country is more than just a courtesy visit.

      Mike_L - 2011-06-22 13:22

No, myancmyfutr... whites in this country desperately want the ANC to manage all of the country's wealth and resources. They've seen the magnificent job that Zuma Jnr. has done with the Aurora mine. They've seen how well ANC cadres have managed Eskom, the SABC and municipalities throughout the country. They've seen once-productive commercial farmland restored to it's proper glory (lying fallow and full of weeds). Whites know that toyi-toying is a driving force behind any successful nation and that smouldering tyres in the streets contribute more to the economy than any number of industrial furnaces. Viva ANC!

      Gorilla - 2011-06-22 13:46

Looking at the replies... no wonder this country is in such a sad state.

      mamakalami - 2011-06-22 13:50

Gorilla - believe me she knows that you are here and I know too...and I know all about your history - and she is here to make sure that your history will never repeat itself.

      Gorilla - 2011-06-22 13:55

@mamakalami. "my history"? Really? You know my history? I doubt that - I doubt that very much.

      Goose - 2011-06-22 14:46

@myancmyfutur 1/4, Here comes some more masturbated vomit. Your emotional response is precisely the kind of thing that leads African leaders to make the mistakes they make. Decisions and action driven by irrational emotion, in place of logical and rational intelligence. So the primary structure of the ANCYL’s mine nationalisation policy has been made public, and extremely clear, numerous times, via numerous media channels. The ANCYL calls for 60% state ownership of mines, paid back to investors over time, with a portion of revue derived from the 60% state ownership used to subsidise education in order for the state to offer free education to those who can not afford it. So yes, we’ve all seen the ANCYL mine nationalisation proposal, …I’m not sure why you haven’t seen it yet. Never the less, on the surface it seems like a very noble thing to do. Siphon profits from the mining sector to subsidise education for the poor. Nice idea, how ever, and this is where some intelligence is required, so I need you to stay with me here. So the returns to investors, in particular foreign investors, of state owned and managed mines regardless of the country in which these mine are held, are not sufficient to justify the investment, given the more competitive returns offered by privately owned and managed mines in other countries. So very simply, if we nationalise the mines, the investors will just very simply take there money away.

      Samuel - 2011-06-22 14:57

@Mulondo - And theANC is busy repeating history by oppressing & hate others in the means of AA, BEE, the talks of land grabs & by murdering farmers, raping woman and torturing people in their homes.

      myancmyfutur - 2011-06-22 15:27

@ Goose, The ANCYL has yet to provide the proposal on mine nationalization, during last week's conference the delegates only agreed on the concept and tasked its NWC to prepare the proposal document for presentation in next year's ANC conference. The reason why there is that tension between the ANCYL and the media is amongst other things the fact that the media is already circulating for debate none-existent ANCYL documents. I see no point or relevance in further making discussions on none issue but am not convienced that you're speaking on behalf of all the investors and I beleive the Chinese will be interested in listerning. Its just unfortunate that the suggestion has come from the mouth of Julius who is the most hated(by white people) black man in SA NB. I see 1 and 3 of your posts

      myancmyfutur - 2011-06-22 15:31

@ Mike, I'm not sure if you are implying that Zuma Jnr got Aurora in a stable condition..Go check your facts pls. The rest of your statement is just a sweeping statement that warrants no response.

      Goose - 2011-06-22 16:08

@myancmyfutur, 1/2 and 1/4 have been deleted for one reason or another, not by me. I had included statistics and economic theory relating to the effects of nationalizing mines in different countries. I guess someone didn't like the story told by the data. Never the less, yes, I am biased towards the investors, in particular the foreign investors. The strength and stability of our economy is more important than the poor people in it, or the historical reasons for their poverty. If our economy were to collapse due to the implementation of foolish economic practices pursued in order to serve the entitlement mentality of poor people (regardless of the reason for their poverty), it is ironically the poor people who suffer first, not the middle class (black or white), upper class (black and white), or investors. For all the good intention behind Mr Malema's proposed ideas, he will bring suffering upon the very people he wishes to enrich. And all through a poor understanding of economics. Our country needs to be run like a business, not a welfare organisation as the ANCYL seem to gravitate towards.

  • Fairland - 2011-06-22 12:32

Mrs Obama's message is clear it is up to youth, as it has been in the past to change the present South Africa into a viable future. Why do comments generally seem to devolve into race based slurs, white and black? Is this not revealing of what our fears are and should we not be presenting our comments in a more positive manner without resorting to the low level that seems to be prevalent. Slanging matches will do nothing to improve our country. A united front against graft, nepotism, crime and all the other ills that beset our country will make the change.

Just another black trying to find her roots it seems. Way too many of them if you ask me. Fortunately I know where I came from, why I ended up in this sh@thole country and why I need to thank the French Roman Catholic Church every day for bestowing that honour on me.

      ANCockup - 2011-06-22 14:07

She is as African as I am American hahahaha!, the stupid cow should be dropped off in the middle of Soweto by herself on a Friday night...she will soon find her roots then!

      daaivark - 2011-06-22 14:21

      So bugger off then, Koos.

      ANCockup - 2011-06-22 15:36

@daaivark you are displaying your ignorance by continuously telling people to leave the country. Are you not aware that countries like Aus and NZ do not just allow people to arrive on their doorstep? White South Africans cannot apply for refugee status yet and the majority of us cannot qualify for permanent residence in these countries. Just because you are happy her (obviously you like the black ladies) doesnt mean we all are.

She is visiting the remnants of the previous South Africa. They never visit Zimbabwe, Ivory Coast, Congo, Niger etc.etc...... and that is afterall where her forefathers come from.

      ANCockup - 2011-06-22 15:38

I think every nigger should visit Niger.

Sad, sad, sad. The quality of most comments on this page is...ugh...beyond shocking. So much hatred, racism, intolerance. Still, there are a few sane voices among them. As was stated before...we're all in this together, let's try to get along, and maybe we can achieve something that has some lasting worth. To those who remain ever so cynical, either go to NZ or put a smile on your face and try to make things work. We are one humanity, whether black, white or crimson. We have so much in common, our differences make the world more interesting, and hey - you get the good, the bad and the ugly in every crew! So lighten up, for the love of all that is holy!

      WeCanAfriCan - 2011-06-22 15:48

Don't worry Douglas. This is the 'freedom' that the press so virulently defends! Cool, hey?

      Doublepost - 2011-06-22 17:49

Yeah, I mean, why bother when a 2 year old girl is shot execution style through the head after being stabbed? Her father tortured and stabbed 151 times. Why bother when another father rapes his 14 year old daughter. Why bother when over 3000 farmers are tortured and killed since 1994, while the "youth leader" gets up on a podium singing about killing them to the applause of those that support him. Why bother, eh? Just smile, or move to New Zealand as South Africa is obviously no place for people who value life. You ask all your questions, think you are right and have all the correct answers to all the problems. Yet when people disagree with you, you shout them down, call them names like "racist" or "bigot" to make yourself feel superior. Tell me, what makes you so different from those bigots hey? You, like them, well destroy a person's life because they disagree with you. So, what makes you superior to them? Well that's the thing. Nothing! The "racists" and the "bigots" that you despise so much have just as much right to their opinions, opportunities and the right to choose to separate themselves from those they see as a danger. So, sorry for you but the "racism" in this country is growing and growing, nothing to do about that now but chose a side. The fireworks are going to be grand. And since South Africa is the test bed for the rest of the world, expect them to follow suit. Tis going to be one HELL OF A RIDE!
