Johannesburg - A 26-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison for murder by the Middelburg Circuit of the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, Mpumalanga police said on Wednesday.

"Yesterday, the court in Middelburg handed down a hefty sentence to Thabang Mohlala for fatally stabbing Jan du Toit, 59, and [robbing him of] his firearm," said Brigadier Selvy Mohlala.

Thabang Mohlala pleaded guilty to the murder charge.

"He was sentenced to 15 years for housebreaking with intent to rob and robbery with aggravating circumstances. He was sentenced to life for murder. The 15-year sentence will run concurrently with the murder sentence," said the brigadier.

"The court heard how on 18 September 2012 at approximately 04:00, Du Toit was awakened by a noise in his house at Kanonkop in Middelburg. He then took his firearm and went to investigate."

According to his wife Maria, Du Toit noticed Thabang Mohlala and instructed him to lie down at gunpoint. He then asked him how many there were in the house.

"Thabang Mohlala said they were four and Du Toit began searching for the other suspects. During that process, Mohlala managed to stand up and wrestled with Du Toit over the firearm," Brigadier Mohlala said.

Maria told the court she noticed what was happening, took a knife and ran towards Thabang Mohlala and she stabbed him in the back.

Thabang Mohlala managed to disarm her, then took the knife, which he used to stab both her and the husband.

"After the ordeal, [Thabang] Mohlala took Du Toit's firearm, cellphones and fled the scene. Du Toit died at the scene as a result of his injuries while Maria sustained serious injuries to her ear and was taken to hospital for medical treatment," said the brigadier.
