Shooting inquiry politically motivated: Malema

2012-08-21 14:43

Rustenburg - The police, not a commission, should probe the shooting in Marikana, expelled ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema said on Tuesday.

"I do not trust [President Jacob] Zuma. The police must investigate this, not some politically motivated commission. This is the way it is supposed to be done," Malema said.

"The person who established this commission is not an honest man. He established it to arrive at certain conclusions."

Malema was speaking before entering the Marikana police station with residents and miners to lay murder charges against the police following Thursday's shooting at Lonmin's mine. Reporters were not allowed inside.

Last week, the platinum mining company's rock-drill operators in Marikana embarked on a protest that saw 10 people, including two security guards and two police officers, killed.

The protests culminated in clashes with the police on Thursday, in which 34 miners were shot dead, more than 70 injured and 260 arrested.

Zuma set up a judicial commission last week to investigate the shooting.

Malema said some police officers were prepared to conduct the Marikana investigation, if given the opportunity.

"I spoke to some of the police. Some were there on the day and some were not. They said they were not happy with what happened and would investigate the matter if given a chance."

The protests were believed to be linked to rivalry between the National Union of Mineworkers and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union over recognition agreements at the mine. Workers also wanted higher pay.

      jackie.stone.501 - 2012-08-21 17:02

@Tannie the difference between Malema and Zille is that when the miners are killed he moved in to go address them instead of seeming to care when the elections are around the corner.

And to lay charges of murder. What a big joke and misinformative. The State will automatically lay charges of murder towards all those who have been killed. The priogative is not his.

Whether you like Malema or not I am sure he does not care, and I don't either. But the very important thing here is that he is raising very important issues here, and please stop playing the man while the ball is there. If it was the DA or Helen who were raising the very same issues you will all be applauding.

      morientes.munez - 2012-08-21 18:51

@jackie, who rocket your stone? Your comments are off the pitch, just like Malema. Clime back under your stone and show your face in 501 days, maybe by then you could come up with sense!

How can the police investigate a situation in which they themselves are hopelessly implicated in right up to their necks. The workers should lay a case at the international criminal court in the Hague and ask for an in-depth independent multi-national inquiry and investigation. Any internal South African investigation is already so emotionally charged that it would be impossible to derive at a clear, concise and unbiased result and or proper prosecution of those that are guilty of breaking the law. It certainly cannot go forward the way it is, political cadres deployed to investigate the possible implication of party faithful, corporate conspiracy and who knows what else is lying uncovered in this outrages mess that the LONMIN massacre is. And it is a Massacre.

      nigel.vanysendyk - 2012-08-21 16:45

no need for an investigation, the video shows it all, they are guilty of violence, murder, incitement to murder, etc....

"lashed out at President Jacob Zuma and said the commission of inquiry into the Marikana shootings was politically motivated." Every thing he does not like is "Politically Motivated" aswell his banning from the ANC was also "Politically Motivated" "I do not trust Zuma" and last year he was going to kill for Zuma? "The police must investigate this" Must they investigate the murder charges aimed at the police that he is instigating? "the police could do the investigations better" How does he know this? Is he an process expert? "This is the way it is supposed to be done. This is the normal process." What does this LS (Little Sh*t)now of any process? He does not follow processes himself. "The person who established this commission is not an honest man." One honest man on another honest man. Ha Ha Ha !!!

  • issa.kabudula - 2012-08-21 15:35

South Africa as a country as from today - we must learn as people to sit down discuss our issues and accept to be a loser for only a day. very hard to blame the police, Union bosses and the employers - we better rich the point of agreement in peace then in pieces. many of these brothers who died have left wives, mothers brothers sisters and kids and friends who will never see them again. the way they died - too painful to imagine, and when I saw the video on eTV I was shocked, at first I thought its a just movie then some body is telling me that it is not a movie instead its a reality miners who were on strike to a better pay they met a bullet of fire. The employer, the union, the workers had it that we got the spirit of discussing our problems we would have prevented a lot. I dont think if there those who are working today at the mine? I heared that if they don't go to work they will all be fired, ok but can the Lonmin the company get people who got the experience to do the dirty work as these people or its just to scare the weak to go back to work? This must be a big lesson to the unions - some unions got less visions on the workers, provided the worker is contributing they don't care come it may, we have lost big - the police, the workers and the production.

  • devon.riley.52 - 2012-08-21 15:52

As the President of the Youth League Malema was suppose to be concentrating on Creation of Jobs for tha youth, youth in business, education, alcohol abuse by the youth, HIV/AIDS epidemic amongst the youth and not concentrate on things like nationalisation of mines and now his nose is deep in the Marikana issue. Exactly what does Malema stand for, the Youth or the Elite that are enriching themselves like they are doing with the youth league.

      garren.dare - 2012-08-22 08:26

Who can dissagree with that.I would still support the ANC if the real leaders and statesmen in their ranks were voted into power. There are other parties with good policies-but because we are so divided they won't crack it. So let's get rid of the thugs and get the real talent to the top in the ANC - that's the only way out and the party has the talent and leadership within their ranks. Unfortunatley the party is an upside down glass of milk-cream at the bottom
