Miners blame rabbit for shooting

2012-08-25 10:30

Johannesburg - Mineworkers at Lonmin's Marikana mine believe the killing of a rabbit was the reason the shooting happened, according to a report on Saturday.

The surviving mineworkers claimed that the medicine man who was alleged to have told them his muti would make them invincible had warned them not to kill the rabbit, the Saturday Star reported.

"The traditional healer warned all of us several times on the day not to kill the rabbit but some among us decided to chase it around the hill and killed it," mineworker Khabo Khabo told the newspaper.

"I still honestly believe that if it wasn't for the healer far more lives would have been lost on the day. If we had let the rabbit free all of the dead would still be alive," Khabo said.

A worker at the memorial service, held at the mine earlier this week, agreed.

Last Thursday, a total of 34 people were killed in a shooting near the mine when police tried to disperse striking miners. More than 70 people were injured.

The medicine man had reportedly promised the workers that police guns would malfunction when they faced them if they followed his instructions and took his muti.

Police video footage taken from a helicopter before the shooting showed the medicine man performing rituals as workers stripped naked before him in long queues.

Yes, there is much more amiss. I give up. Really, I just could not care less anymore.

      sharon.erwin.96 - 2012-08-25 12:28

As Elmer Fudd would say: "Tut tut, blame it on that pesky wabbit!" Seriously, the muti wouldn't have worked, even if the rabbit was left alone. The reason why not more miners were killed is not because of mumbo jumbo, it is because 27400 police officers failed their firearm proficiency tests! It seems a lot of them were there during the incident, else all of the 400 shots fired that day would have hit a miner!

      thozi - 2012-08-25 12:35

...and yet you still blame the Police, shame on you.

People I've related the story to in Scotland cannot beleive such a thing can happen in the 21st century in a modern country. I quote a saying we used to use in Zim :TAB (thats Africa baby.

      henk63 - 2012-08-26 10:51

The sangoma made some serious money. 3000 miners @ R1000,00 a shot! They say it was the police, but it was actually the skin & feather clad oke who made a killing.

  • gvangreunen - 2012-08-25 10:46

Well superstition is as superstition does... Unfortunately will not change as is the same despite the Eastern and Western Influence - is still the same as the AFRICA I saw and travelled through - worked in and was born into 70 years ago....

  • Cheryl Meyrick - 2012-08-25 10:47

What utter nonsense! As a South African living overseas, I've been following this story online and on the tele. The mine workers are being portrayed as hard done by, while the SAPS are the villains! Members of my community are commenting on how these poor mine workers are struggling on the breadline etc etc and I have to bite my tongue in fear or appearing biased. These workers have a job, unlike 47% of unemployed unskilled south Africans. What's the problem? They strike unlawfully and don't resume their responsibilities at work after a wk of striking, yet Zuma pretends to be a fence sitter.... If these workers refused to return back to work in EU, they'd find themselves without a job! I ask the question again. What's the problem here? Unskilled workers demanding skilled workers wages who believe in medieval witchery, who now need a scapegoat for their actions.... So blame it on a conspiracy! I'm embarrassed and ashamed to say I initially sympathised with these mine workers, especially the surviving ones! SA will never be my home again unless the fat cats at the top ie Mr President and Co stop with corruption and make their own feel worthwhile. Most crime committed appears to be down to need.... It is now Me President, that you people NEED to feel valued and safe in their beautiful country! Do something about it!

      dave.nutter.75 - 2012-08-25 10:59

The 'healer' was also paid R1000.00 a head for the inoculations - the sole purpose of which is to avoid injury during a pre-emptive attack on another force - this is always carried out BEFORE a skirmish and was in use at the time of Shaka - there can be no doubt that these 'miners' were intent on attacking and killing police officers - they would have killed every last one of them if the police had fled or capitulated.

      Jason - 2012-08-25 12:28

@warwick, what exactly is the difference between you commenting in SA and someone commenting from overseas? Is your comment going to change something that Cheryl's, or mine, won't?

      felican - 2012-08-25 13:52

AND I too am STRUGGLING on my pittance BELOW the Bread Line - IT IS CALLED Government Old Age Pension.. R1 200 per month NOW what can YOU do with that I wonder.. Ask those there please Cheryl.. And see my post as well - Thank you...

      christiaan.oosthuizen.568 - 2012-08-26 23:10

In Dubai and Saudi unskilled Indians and phillipino's go for about 3500 rand a month For Artisans R5000/ month , by that Std , the mine workers are actual well paid

      Gareth.S.Hall - 2012-08-27 08:10

Warwick Bristow: I seriously doubt that while you were overseas you had some paradigm shift and a change of heart, that compelled you to return to South Africa to make a difference to the lives of the locals. You most likely went over seas and just couldn't make it there, probably because of emotional and social starvation, and then returned home because you just couldn't adapt to life there. So while pretending that you're a saint is a nice thing to tell yourself, your comments just come off as resentful. Also, do you really need a list of people who have made a difference to their countries of birth while in exile? Judging by your comments you indicate that this is not possible, but I can assure you there are lots of South Africans on that list. And finally, who says that South Africans people overseas aren't going to return some day with their significant pensions? Think before you spout nonsense.

  • ioannouparis - 2012-08-25 10:48

Okay so lets get this straight They went to the MEDICINE man to make them invincible. The medicine man promised the police officers guns will malfunction. SO THEN WHY did they decide to run towards the police officers with panga's, guns and weapons. What were there intentions? Just lock them all up and throw away the key or all 4000 of them should have run towards the police. They must lock up the medicine man also or send him to the consumer protection court for selling faulty or non working I wish i could write a book on all the spiritual rubbish in this place, muti, tokoloshe's, apparently the evil fish with the head of a horse in the eastern cape...

      Tebz001 - 2012-08-25 18:37

It must be tough to be a black person in the new South Africa..........It seems as if they just can't decide who or what they want to be or where they belong.... the traditional Xhoza, Zulu, Tswana or whatever tribe or sivilised and Westernized............ When it suits them, they will wear their leopard skin thongs, jump around like the possessed, uneducated, uncultured people in the Amazon and other forests one often see on the Discovery channel while waving their pangas and assegaais around, run to and believe the rubbish songomas tell them, still believe in the power of muti, tokoloshe's etc., while on the other hand they like the flashy Western watches and clothes, big houses in prime estates and large , expensive vehicles that they can buy due to the governments pressure on banks to make loans available to each and everyone, whether they can pay it back or not

Respecting a culture is one thing, what these idiots are waffling on about is not a culture, but an attempt to try and worm their way out of the world of hurt that is going to come their way. From everything thats coming out now, its almost a given that the commission of inquiry will find that the cops acted correctly and that these morons charged the police with the intention of killing them.
