Miners 'won't vote for ANC after Marikana'

2012-12-06 22:11

Johannesburg - Mineworkers will not vote for the African National Congress at the next national elections, a worker at Lonmin's Marikana operation said in Johannesburg on Thursday.

"We might not be educated, but we understand politics... and in politics people do not die as they did in Marikana.

"We are not telling people not to vote... vote, but to not vote for the ANC," Tholakele Dlunga said at the University of Johannesburg.

He was speaking at the launch of a book about the events at Marikana.

Dlunga accused the government of killing 34 of his colleagues during a violent wage strike on 16 August. Police opened fire on the striking miners near a koppie in Wonderkop.

The book, Marikana: A View from the Mountain and a Case to Answer was authored by UJ's head of sociology Professor Peter Alexander and four others.

Dlunga said he cursed the ANC's upcoming elective conference in Mangaung.

"If Mangaung caused Marikana, then I curse it."

...and JZ. Losing Nkandla by-election clear warning the people are starting to see "things".

      christelle.theron.3 - 2012-12-06 23:42

Votes are conditional - conditional that your party live up to your expectations as a voter! So well done for the miners to take that stance - and let them stick to it.

      themba.maseko.568 - 2012-12-07 07:01

The miners were on a illegal strike, killed police and colleagues, carried dangerous weapons, and most importantly police were not instructed by the ANC to shoot at the miners. The miners should also be apologetic rather than to make further threats. We must encourage ALL our citizen to obey the law, not just politicians only.

@themba.maseko.568 It seems that you do not care about quite a lot of things but you, nevertheless, feel the need to post on/about all these things you don't care about just so you could show everyone how much you don't care.

      philemon.ndlovu.5 - 2012-12-07 09:17

@themba, according to Cynthia Carrel 13m people work on the mines. If every miner felt like this man and voted for another party this will cause an upset in the 2014 election. "An injury to one is an injury to all".

      mzwa.mthombeni - 2012-12-07 10:22

Ja ja, the poor people who supported the idea of storming the police with pangas and sticks with intent to kill won't vote ANC. That's great, but it still does not make them the victims.

Anything anti this bunch of ANC thugs works for me.

      hein.huyser - 2012-12-06 22:48

goodguy, we agree but differ in our reasons. Why are you so scared of the DP winning? They do a good enough job of it in W Cape, and if that mentality can be brought into all other provinces, I can only see a better life for all. Me thinks you are somewhere on the gravy train and are scared for being exposed, or you are about to get on the gravy train and are scared on missing out at your shot at the millions waiting to be collected. If I'm wrong, then please do tell why not the DP? Cant be because you like our infrastructure collapsing, 13%math pass rate of our kids, missing billions and inept police force, not to mention no health care. So please do tell.

      thabo.mkokeli - 2012-12-06 23:25

      walter.tgsa - 2012-12-07 05:45

Don't worry goodguy, the miners will definitely vote for the ANC again, I have no doubt whatsoever...

      andre.vandeventer.16 - 2012-12-07 07:12

The government killed the miners? They are so stupid they will actually vote for the ANC in any event. They don't know better and they certainly don't seem tom understand what's going on around them!

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-12-07 10:07

Do you even know the DA's policies? Do some research and then maybe you will see that the DA actually has plans in place to get this country out of the hole the ANC dug us into.

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-12-07 10:09

@letlhogonolo.selebalo That will never happen. Apartheid will never happen again. Whites do not want to oppress anyone. Just because a few old, evil, stupid-a$$ Nats had those ideals, does NOT mean all white people think that way.

  • renard.souza - 2012-12-06 22:25

Strickers brought weapons to a "peaceful demonstration" a recipe for disaster. Now it's a political issue? Really

      Randomhero6661 - 2012-12-12 13:01

*strikers - nothing to do here

  • lacrimose.wolf - 2012-12-06 22:28

Au contraire, you do not understand politics at all. Impoverished, highly manipulable labour has been *the* weapon of the ANC for the last 100 years. The sacrifices extorted in the vague promise of a brighter future should never have continued after '94 without question. No matter who you support, always ask WHEN, HOW and HOW MUCH. And make sure they deliver on time and within budget.

      John - 2012-12-07 00:04

And that, my friend is why I grow tired of our politics. I respect Zille for sticking to her guns and providing substantiated reasons for everything she brings up. Being held accountable and showing what you have done for the people is at the very core of good governance. ANC do not care, and feel no need to explain themselves to anyone, not even their own blind followers - they reply to Zille or any opposer with contempt, the race card or any means of unsubstantiated and emotional reply. They feel no need to be held accountable to anyone - this is how arrogant they've grown to be. Information bill, nkandla, silencing the sabc, bullying Brett Murray into submission, dishing out bribe money for ore rights to absolutely anyone connected or befriended by MP's, lack of appropriate actions to rectify schooling woes, kickbacks for gautrain and tolling system and the list continues unanswered. As long as they have so many seats, questions of accountability will only serve as cheap entertainment to keep us, the citizens talking. To no avail..

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-12-07 01:30

Accountability is a Colonialist concept. It has no place in a feudalistic, tribal culture which still sees anyone in an Italian suit, wearing a Swiss watch, driving a German car and having an R2.5mill home, as king - instead of thief and liar. They still yank patriarchal heartstrings - taxing the people to death, keeping them impoverished, uneducated and unhealthy - to keep the hierarchy and control intact. Much like the Russians, there is still this belief that the people are "their children". That they need to be told what to do, what to think, where, how and when to act. They have a total disrespect for the very people they purport to serve because they don't see them as people, human beings, merely a means to an end.

      nic.nomicos.3 - 2012-12-07 07:52

      Ditto guys, well commented...

      5centsWorth - 2012-12-07 09:08

Agreed fully, lacrimose. That is how they view it, inspite of it being a core principle our politics is legally built on. They also continually speak of 'democracy' but use the term quite loosely. The traditional tribal system is the reason they don't dare criticise King Goodwill leaching millions and millions of tax payer's money for cars etc, because 'he is the king' as if he had a god-given right to bleed everyone dry. It will take time to change that as the modern middle class grows with independent thinking. On rural areas, they will die of hunger and not lift a finger to criticise the king while he lives a lavish lifestyle. They view Zuma in the same light. Doesn't matter how stupid he is, he should be 'respected' merely because he is the president.

  • thebe.tau - 2012-12-06 22:35

I don't vote for ANC myself but i think they will.

  • goodguy.buthelezi - 2012-12-06 22:37

The masses might be getting gatvot with the ruling party but i personally dont see DA getting something [vote wise] out of it. White folks you might not like what im going to say but the only way DA can win elections is when the Party elects a black leader, a down to earth person, the masses can relate to not Mazibuko

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-12-06 22:50

The problem with the ANC *is* their "down-to-earth" charm. We don't want to be down in the earth any more. We need "get down to work".

      mauritz.duplessis.1 - 2012-12-06 22:51

Is that because you are racist and refuse to listen to good leaders just because of colour?

      hein.huyser - 2012-12-06 22:56

Ggodguy, see my question to your first post. Please reply. As for this post, it does not matter who the DP have as its leader. You will still not vote for them. Simply because by making posts like these you confirm that some people have a self destruct gene. No matter how bad the anc does, you still think that the majority of people who voted way back in 92 to have change away from apartheid wants to bring it back. I know you rather believe the lies, that is your self-destruct gene kicking in. We still don't know that we don't know.

      jak.daladd - 2012-12-06 23:27

Goodguy Buthelezi, DA, ANC, Cope, who cares, can we not just get some guys in that care about the country? There are good guys in the ANC, but there are also good guys in the other parties. Time to them all come to the fore instead of the corruption we are seeing at the moment. The toll roads are a good example, we need those roads and if tolls are really the way then let it be but why allow someone to gain so much money at our expense, the toll fee collections system is the main problem, take that price out and maybe things won't look so bad.

      mvundlela.levy - 2012-12-06 23:41

eish, goodguy, how can the masses not relate to the blue tekkies and the dance moves. :)

      Bob - 2012-12-07 01:07

I don't understand what all the down-thumbs for Goodguy is all about... he only pointed out the simple truth in our social environment. You'd have to be blissfully ignorant to deny that this country is still extremely racially divided, and since 80 percent of the country is black, there's little chance of a non-black president being voted into power. The DA will undoubtably gain 10 percent or so of ANC's voters but winning an election in the long run requires more transformation in the party.

      mark.corrigan.3910 - 2012-12-07 07:45

It's quite clear to see who the real racists in this country are. When Mandela became president, the majority of whities were prepared to give it a go. They continued to pump their love and effort into making this country great, while knowing that finally Africans can determine the country's destiny as they wish. I hope all you racists are proud, because what this country is becoming is directly attributed to you - including you, goodguy. This racist myth of "whites bringing back Apartheid" is propaganda designed for the uneducated. Bringing back Apartheid? In today's world? Are you f#&king serious?!

      mark.corrigan.3910 - 2012-12-07 07:48

Oh, and you ("the people")can't relate to Lindiwe. Why? Because she is educated and speaks well, and isn't just another Angie-type drone?! So you are saying is that we are stuck with the precedent of an imbecilic, corrupt degenerate "president" who makes empty promises while LIVING like a king? So the people relate to a racist, sexist thief and liar?! Nice. We get the government we deserve. Hope you peeps like mud pies.

      aarchaic - 2012-12-07 08:21

The DA has made it public that the 2019 national elections a Black person will be leading the party and you can see it with the structure already changing Mmusi Maimane, will most likely be that candidate. here some reading from 2011 -

      JohannDuToit - 2012-12-07 09:11

I would put my mark next to a black leader in the DA. Who cares about race... As long as that person is an open minded, educated and professional honest person that has the commen sense to make proper decisions. Not some idiot that is so obsessed about enriching him and his family, that he steals from the poor.

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-12-07 10:11

Oh FFS, goodguy... stop with the white folks this, black folks that... We are all the same, we are all citizens of this country. And WE need to make sure that the ruling party does a good job; be it DA or IFP or whoever. There are more black members of the DA than white, so i think you are highly confused.

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-12-06 22:52

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-12-07 01:43

Yep please ask Local, Provincial and National Govt what they did with all the very many taxes they take from mining - money they swore would be used for "development projects". Also ask what happens to the gargantuan revenues the State gets from exporting all that is taken out of the ground. From what I have seen, there's not even a road let alone housing, a school, plumbing, electricity, etc. It's all going whooshing by in fully imported German cars, 1st class flights, overseas hotels etc. Money keeping the alleged enemy employed whilst their own people suffer and starve.

I guess people just enjoy living in a country where nothing works, service is non-existent, RDP houses are not being built. Did you know that T.Sexwale has only spent 6% of his annual budget for RDP housing and sanitation facilities? So the promise is as good as the real thing? A question... promises constantly broken for 18 years, why do people still believe these promises?

And you are? The prophet of doom? Dont hold your breath. Dont repent yet. Lol!!

  • thabo.manganye - 2012-12-07 05:04

We have heard that story before but the ANC still walks away with it. Don't know why people always try to mislead or to pretend yet when they are in that ballot box, they vote for that very party they say they don't like, this is cheap politicking.

  • dee.bone.39 - 2012-12-07 05:12

to many people do not understand that politicians often lie. Your country should come before ANY political party. The stronger a political party the less it will serve the people

  • karl.vanrooyen - 2012-12-07 05:25

If you don't vote anc your ancestors will be angry . And of coarse the TOKOLOSHE will get you !! Boo !

      peter.mokoena.31 - 2012-12-07 06:24

I have never in my entire life read a stupid commentary like yours. U mockingly misinterpreted peoples culture. Shows how empty headed, ignorant and arrogant.

      talana.malherbe - 2012-12-07 06:44

Exactly Peter. Karl, you are a moron, don't patronise people, you are only showing that you are the idiot her.

      nettie.potgieter.5 - 2012-12-07 06:50

Karel jy is bloot onopgevoed. You do not respect other people and the kind we do not need in this country.

  • ponkie.diel.9 - 2012-12-07 05:43

Please! Vote with your brains, not your heart. If us whiteys voted with our hearts, Jan Smuts' party, or heaven forbid, the National Party, would still have been in power, but most of us have seen the light a long time ago.

      Tiyani.Morelove.Mathebula - 2012-12-07 06:53

I can't bealive you just said u whiteys would still be having the National Party! Keep on dreaming.. This is not about u racists the ANC is failing black people you whiteys as u call urself are relaxed in ur surbubs. You know nothing about unemployment or poverty well im from limpopo I do know. Don't even coment! we rather die at the hands of the corrupt ANC than give in to you aigan whiteys, so think before u coment Ponkie!!

      mark.corrigan.3910 - 2012-12-07 07:34

What a moronic thing to say. Hahaha, I see about 3 homeless whities everyday on my route, the number is growing. But do you think that is a good thing - that we are all poor and happy together?! Because that's what the ANC wants. Careful what you wish for, because you WILL die under the corrupt ANC. The next few years under them (when their power gets threatened) will make Marikana look like a Sunday school picnic. Then I hope you remember your stupid, racist moronic comment.

      mzwa.mthombeni - 2012-12-07 08:41

Ponkie:Should we be greatful for that? Do us no favours!! Mark: Always counting Black or White faces.... Typical! Expand your world view!!

  • allan.rosenberg.752 - 2012-12-07 05:56

Your comment that you have a SAY within the ANC government just because you vote for them is not really true. What say do you actually have at the moment? I don't see job improvement. I don't see better education- i dont see improved hospitals and clinics - the road infrustructure is getting worse (except the new road to Inkandla) - a large percentage of the police force are corrupt - murder, highjacking, rape and robbery have increased so if you have had a say in any of this, I would rather you keep your mouth tightly shut. It's time that people with your same thinking pattern actually take a step back and see what your government have really done for you to improve your lifestyle. This is directed at the majority of South Africans, not at Sivuyile only

I share their sentiments, how can one vote for the defective leadership? How can we vote for the deputy president elect who has miners blood on his hands? How stupid can we be to vote for Zuma again? Those going to Mangaung is not for us, we will speak at the polls in 2014.

  • jabu.chiloane - 2012-12-07 06:22

Who killed the ,10 people who died before the other 34 who died.I understand its not the government.

I'm a mine worker and have already made up my mind about the coming elections. i'm not voting for ANC and my family agrees with me, however i'm still struggling to have 100% confidence in DA but i like the way they govern the western cape. If Zile could show her love to the rural areas then she can get my vote and that of other mine workers.

      taylor.lekebe - 2012-12-07 06:53

You struggling to have confidence on her, first you don't know western cape how separated are coloureds and blacks that site that's why cape flats it's still a mess and danger be updated edwin

      pwhanekom - 2012-12-07 07:02

Edwin, in Western Cape all the schools have already received their new textbooks for 2013. 98% of households have access to electricity. Education will set you and your children free not empty promises by ANC.

  • teboho.martin.3 - 2012-12-07 06:39

I support mine workers about the way they feel ,and I think this. Article deserve to be shared.Zuma is an bogus president

      mzwa.mthombeni - 2012-12-07 08:28

Delusions of grandeur! You're a hopeful dreamer! Zuma is going nowhere! The sooner this sinks in,the better for you.

  • pwhanekom - 2012-12-07 06:58

In the Western Cape ALL new textbooks for CAPS curricuclum for Gr 4-6 and Gr 11 (that starts in 2013) has already been delivered to the schools! Any ANC ruled province that can beat that?

  • taylor.lekebe - 2012-12-07 07:05

Critics come up with solutions don't entertain the media it's been runned by whites and they still in charge an got power to control us, Arrogant views being made now will harm the future generation to come BUT HOWEVER it's been proven that many black people still believe that a white man is a true serious reliable special boss than their brothers it shows within ourselves we lack leadership esteem an the believe that we can change this country!! ViVA african national congress ViVA matLA

  • tshidiso.ditsele - 2012-12-07 07:06

  • siphoza.zandela - 2012-12-07 07:16

To my fellow black brothers and sisters, I just want to say a big thank you for not wanting to vote ANC after Marikana. One of the owners of the mine are none other then Cyril Ramaphosa and his cronnies. Its shocking that the ANC is killing its own people, its like the Genoicide in the Congo and Liberia and the old war in Angola, where their own countries black goverments are killing their own black brothers and sisters. BUt pls, do you country a favour and vote with your heart, soul and brain and vote for the DA, dont let your votes go to waste and dont vote for smaller parties, VOTE for the super oposition party, the DA which isnt happy with most of the ANC's policies, as the ANC policies only caters for the Elite black upper class with money, ZUMA and his camp and circle of rich black friends like Cyril. VOTE DA COME 2014 AND HELP US TO MAKE SOUTH AFRICA A BETTER PLACE AND LIFE FOR ALL. STOP BLAMING AN APARTIED FOR MARIKANA, STOP BLAMING APARTIED FOR POOR TO NO SERVICE DELIVERY, STOP BLAMING AN APARTIED FOR NKANDLA KRAAL. STOP BLAMING AN APARTIED FOR INEQUALITY. ITS A NEW SOUTH AFRICA BROTHERS WHERE BY BLACKS CAN GO TO THE WHITE PLACES, BLACK CAN NOW GO TO WHITE SCHOOLS, BLACKS CAN LIVE IN THE RICH WHITE AREAS, BLACKS CAN NOW DRIVE BMW'S, BLACKS CAN NOW HAVE TOP JOBS, BLACKS CAN WALK AROUND THE STREETS AFTER 10PM WITHOUT PERMITS OR BEING LOCKED UP.......BLACKS TODAY ARE THE NEW WHITES.......

      jakalas.kruger - 2012-12-07 07:25

      phumlane.mambane.3 - 2012-12-07 07:40

What makes you think that the DA is going to do better than the ruling party if it happen that they get a chance to rule? Or are you just excited that there might be change in SA,but not being aware if it's going to be worse or better.

      Anathi Matika - 2012-12-07 08:13

@Phumlane. What makes you think the DA won't do better than the ANC? I'm not DA, but to me my vote will be worthy to them.

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-12-07 13:59

How do you know until you try? The DA is not a 'white' party... The party that does the best job should be voted in. Voting based on loyalty or fear is just stupid.

  • emmanuel.baloyi.75 - 2012-12-07 07:30
