Cape Town - Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Senzeni Zokwana has expressed concern over safety in the fishing industry after at least 12 fishermen drowned in the Western Cape last Sunday.

''Yesterday [Thursday] we visited the incident that happened in the Western Cape where people were involved in an accident. A number of them lost their lives and three are still unaccounted for,'' he said on Friday via video link to Parliament.

''Our hearts go to those families and hope with time they will heal.''

Specifics would not be discussed yet due to an investigation by the South African Maritime Safety Unit, but he said the department was "really concerned" and hoped measured would be taken to ensure safety played a key role in the fishing industry.

Nine bodies were recovered and three crewmen were presumed to have drowned out of 21-strong crew when the MFV Lincoln, operated by Viking Fishing Company, took on water in heavy swells and keeled over.
