Minister heard yelling k-word

2012-04-01 09:34

Cape Town - Lulu Xingwana, Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, shocked fellow passengers on an SAA flight when she swore at cabin crew and used the k-word.

She was furious because SAA crew wouldn’t upgrade her ticket from economy class to business class on the Thursday night flight from Accra in Ghana to Johannesburg.

A fellow passenger said he saw how Xingwana yelled at a white air hostess: “Shut up! Shut up! Is it because I’m a kaffir?”

Business class was apparently full.

When the air hostess tried to calm her down, Xingwana apparently said: “But I’m a stakeholder in this company.”

She was offered a seat in the front row of economy class.

“The minister was like a naughty child. She put her bag on her lap with her arms around it,” said the fellow passenger.

“I was shocked and embarrassed. It is a national minister.”

SAA spokesperson Dilesang Koetle confirmed the incident and apologised for being unable to upgrade the minister.

Xingwana’s spokesperson Cornelius Tanana Monama denied that the minister had yelled at anyone and denied that she had used the k-word.

He also said she never said anything about being an SAA stakeholder.

He said she had politely requested to be upgraded and had been shocked by the rude and disrespectful behaviour of the SAA staff member.

  • antoinette.jordaan - 2012-04-01 09:39

So everybody on the plane hears this, but now it's just the SAA staff that don't know what they heard?

      John - 2012-04-01 09:59

Can you imagine the uproar if this story was the other way round and the SAA staff member said the "K" word. Holy $hit, it would be front page news for a month and there would have been a Kangaroo court justice at the airport. The fat cow would then have sued SAA and blah blah blah. Fire her fat a$$ already!

      Nemo - 2012-04-01 10:10

Common, this is a April Fool! What is next minister of Mangos and pineapples?

      Tanie - 2012-04-01 10:30

I was on the flight and did not here anything, do you believe my statement? you selective believer. If she indeed said what she is accused of, it should be an eye opener to you about the extend of trauma you caused to innocent people for your own gain.

      amananga - 2012-04-01 11:34

The source of this story is an anonymous passenger.

      Benn - 2012-04-01 11:49

What is the fuss? Its Russian for comrade.

      champ.bopape - 2012-04-01 12:44

Come on fellow Africans. Pulling off the race card is clearly a sign of incompetence with the aim of trying to silence the other in a debate. It is like yelling "it is because you are fat!" at an obese person you are trying to reason with. This tactic really does say a lot about you as weak!!! STOP IT!!!

      champ.bopape - 2012-04-01 12:52

As for the honorable minister, you aught to step down, for your insult amounts to an insult to all the black people in this country, especially coming from you - as a LEADER. Be ashamed of yourself. The lady hostess needs to sue for the minister's insinuation!!!

      Johnnie - 2012-04-01 13:19

That is how they all are, there is always one that backs the other one up. I think they pass an exam before they go to Parliament.

      Jack - 2012-04-01 13:21

I'd say yes!! You think therefore you are!!

      valcooperRSA - 2012-04-01 14:14

      Squeegee - 2012-04-01 15:20

We also wish we could 'upgrade' the minister. Unfortunately there is no stock on better ministers at the moment. No refunds or trade ins available.

      bluzulu - 2012-04-02 09:07

Had a family member on the same flight and he heard NATA.

      Sheda - 2012-04-02 09:31

Fire the racist brat.... This is the type of abuse the FF should be chasing (all the way to International Courts)

      Cindy - 2012-04-02 11:11

Arrogant bloodsucker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fire her sad ass, thats not how staff of a national carrier deserve to be treated by self-important, under-performing, money-grabbing politicians!

      Spyker - 2012-04-02 11:52

The white air-hostess should just have said "YES" - after all, what the ANC says is 'law', is it not..?

      Jackie - 2012-04-02 15:33

And doesnt this madame of the cabinet sound and behave a lot like the madame of the cabinet from the bar brawl posted on you tube? Might they have caught something in the water? Hmmm. Well we will probably paying for both of these cases to go to court soon too! The joys.....

      Jackie - 2012-04-02 15:34

      @OOM KRIEL - Ag shame oom....gaan slaap 'n bietjie.

  • - 2012-04-01 09:39

Someone is getting too big for their shoes eh madam?

      Char - 2012-04-01 11:30

Kolobe, get over yourself. Bad service is a fact of life in this country. It's high time you stopped equating every thing that happens to you as a racial event! Bet you that you think the traffic lights only turn red for black people too!!!

      Walter - 2012-04-01 12:34

@Kolobe: Hope this makes you feel any better? I very recently flew SAA (business class) from South America to Johannesburg and got lousy service, BY TWO SAA WHITE FLIGHT ATTENDANTS! And yes, me is a pale face, so what was your argument again?

      Jenny - 2012-04-01 12:48

Please don't feed the troll Kolobe by replying to him. He must be laughing up his sleeve to get a reaction from you. He talks such nonsense, it is clear he is just out to wind you all up.

      Morne - 2012-04-01 13:05

@Kolobe -maybe if she was better organized, she would not be in this situation.

      roger.pacey - 2012-04-01 13:55

This minister's short temper and propensity to make inappropriate statements in the heat of the moment was widely reported when she was minister of agriculture. It makes the spokesman's denial less credible than if another cabinet minister had been involved.

      Saleé - 2012-04-01 15:53

@Kolobe, I do not believe that.

      jpstrauss - 2012-04-02 12:11

Someone's getting too big for her seat, more likely.

  • edandchris - 2012-04-01 09:41

    Right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!She was ever so polite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Schmee - 2012-04-01 10:04

I guess her spokes person doesn't know what it is like to be polite.

  • Firebird - 2012-04-01 09:43

    Hmmmmmm perhaps she is one

      Peter - 2012-04-02 08:19

      All day long, jip!!

  • Cecilia - 2012-04-01 09:44

From personal experience, I know that 'clients' can be some of the most spoiled, selfish, conceited BRATS on the planet. They feel that they pay for the right to treat other people like sh*t. To make it worse, this is supposed to be one of the leaders of our country. No wonder the situation in our country looks the way it does. Sad, very sad indeed!!

      alansmartSnr - 2012-04-02 22:26

"A rose is a rose, by any other name". A spoiled underperforming Fat Cat is a Fat Cat by any other name. Hmmm Wonder about the "K" word.

  • Ezette - 2012-04-01 09:46

  • Julie - 2012-04-01 09:48

  • kirsty.hunt - 2012-04-01 09:49

and SAA actually apologised for not being able to upgrade the woman!

      watsongeorgejan - 2012-04-01 10:22

Remember she's a stakeholder, people don't want to lose their jobs. EISH!!

  • Julie - 2012-04-01 09:53

Some people don't know of any better, therefore one should feel sorry for them. Impossible to change them!

      jannie.beirowski - 2012-04-01 10:29

Remember she is one of the previously disadvantaged people. It may take a generation or 2, or 3, or 4 to upgrade some of them. I am afraid just as they were unable to upgrade her seat, they are unable to upgrade her. Will the ANC now charge her with insulting the party?

  • Sandra - 2012-04-01 09:53

    n mens kry darem skaam!

  • velvybokov - 2012-04-01 09:54

If it were a white minister behaving like this, the minister would be arrested. This silly disgraceful immature brat of a minister should in my opinion have been arrested and no preferential treatment be given to her because she is a minister. It is well known that if you abuse and intimidate cabin crew u can be dealt with in a manner that resures everyone elses safety. If this incident is true - which it probably is - then the minister should be fired for conduct unbecoming.

  • Seducect - 2012-04-01 09:54

Maybe she was "too big" to fit in a normal economy class seat.

      alansmartSnr - 2012-04-02 22:32

      @ Seducect.. LOL..good one!

  • schewitz - 2012-04-01 09:55

ANC officials are beyond the absurd. Why should she get put in first class if she paid for an economy class ticket. and if it is the tax payer paying for her ticket she should sit in economy. the extra money can go to education or alleviating poverty...but then again the anc dont really care about how they spend our money

      Sharon - 2012-04-01 11:05

We always sit waaaaay in the back of the plane, with our co-peasants. What makes her more special than us?

  • ledwabab - 2012-04-01 09:56

the fat cats always want a bigger seat to fit into.

      Bwah, I love your comment!

  • marcanthonytaylor - 2012-04-01 09:59

What an arrogant cow (oops). You pay for economy then you fly economy like everyone else. whether you are a minister or a stakeholder.

Arrogant. I fail 2understand some of these Top position ppl sometimes. This is how some treat their subordinates in the workplace.

  • Nerina Truter Smith - 2012-04-01 10:04

why did she want to upgrade only when she got on the plain? Her department should bought a business class ticket before hand. Even me, a 'normal' SA citizen cant wait till Im on the plain to change my mind where I would like to be seated and then expect it múst be available!

      Mary - 2012-04-01 20:24

Tienie, miskien sal mense van die buiteland nou begin besef wat die K woord beteken.

  • Robert - 2012-04-01 10:04

    Didnt she mean "steakholder"

      Mary - 2012-04-01 20:26

      Definately not a MENSA candidate.

  • Cassandra Olivier - 2012-04-01 10:05

      Mary - 2012-04-01 20:28

      More likely a Sub-normal load. :-D

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-04-01 10:12

    1) Why is there even a portfolio for "Women, Children and People with disabilities" ? (a) Are these people not humans or South African citizens? (b) What has this lady (who acts like what the Arabs call an infidel) ever done for these people? 2) One would assume the minister should work towards improving the lives of people in South Africa. WTF is she doing gallivanting all over Arica for? 3) Why would this "infidel" want to spend more money than is necessary, on a flight which wasn't necessary in the first place? 4) What does she mean she is a stakeholder? Is she getting some sort of dividend? Are all South African taxpayers not stakeholders as well? I think we should all get over this "k" word phobia. It has nothing to do with race. a European can be a "k" as well.

      H.Les.Mitchell - 2012-04-01 10:28

Nicely put, but are you sure in your 1(b) that "lady" is the right word?

      Jacqui - 2012-04-01 11:47

You have this useless portofolio because Zuma had attacks of grandeur when he took office and enlarged the whole cabinet. He wanted to add another post; "He that marries many times" but it wasn't allowed. Now he has to do his own book keeping.

  • Patricia - 2012-04-01 10:12

looks like the 1st word the ministers learnt in school is denial. We buried the k word years ago. Why dig up the past. Who is being a racist now??????

      alansmartSnr - 2012-04-02 22:44

Just pondering whether the 3 letter K word would not have been more discriptive and factual.

      Klaus - 2012-04-03 02:07

alansmart, you went right over the head of 90% of this readership..well done

  • Sidney Gilroy - 2012-04-01 10:14

The minister seems to have a HUGE chip on her shoulder and an even more huge ass to seat. Maybe that is why she wanted to be upgraded.

she has huge chip on her plate

      alansmartSnr - 2012-04-02 22:55

  • Niki - 2012-04-01 10:14

I guess, judging from past history, that both the eyewitnesses and Ms Xingwana's were telling the truth: Even if she was using the tone and words mentioned, Ms Xingwana was, for her, being relatively polite...

      John - 2012-04-01 10:57

You have to pity the poor people who fall under her Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities portfolio.

  • Herbert - 2012-04-01 10:18

He he he, I expect this sort of outburst from someone who advocated the burning of schools during the 80's.

  • H.Les.Mitchell - 2012-04-01 10:21

Let's see if I have this right: The cabin crew, an SAA spokesperson and at least one fellow passenger witnessed the incident first-hand; however, Xingwana's spokesperson - who may or may not have been on the flight - denied that it took place at all, but said instead the SAA staff member was rude and disrespectful. Odd how the minister's words are quoted verbatim whilst the 'white' crew member's "rude & disrespectful" words are not quoted at all. And why is the skin colour of the crew member important?

      Jacqui - 2012-04-01 11:50

David, it is a complex situation. In this country whites are the scapegoat and blacks innocent victims. How do they otherwise want to run the place into the ground?.

      Patsy - 2012-04-01 13:05

      Well said H.Les Mitchell.

  • eradingoana - 2012-04-01 10:28

That is what we mean by cadre deployment. Go Minister GO. She does not have borders and can explode like Juju. She is not even ashamed because she was traveling on tax-payer's expences.

  • Wade - 2012-04-01 10:28

sorry... must be apartheid's fault again.....

  • Piet - 2012-04-01 10:29

So she know where she comes from.....

  • Leonard - 2012-04-01 10:31

Im willing to wager that the hostess gets fired because she is an apartheid spy and used to work for Wouter Basson and has land that needs to be redistributed and also lives in Verwoerd Park....the white racist who dares to do her job. She should be striking like any "guud komrad" the imperialist swine. Its her fault that the peoples education is in the gutter. Perhaps for her we can bring back the penalty or at least have her travel in a taxi the mother of all caregiving transports..

      Jacqui - 2012-04-01 11:52

Leonard and she is responsible from keeping economic freedom from the poor lambs.

  • Deon - 2012-04-01 10:31

Well at least she still knows what she is, no matter how hard the government trying through legislation forbidding us to use that word. That is all these blacks can think about when they are loosing a battle, bringing up the racist threat, do they really thing we cared a $hit and scared of it.

  • michelle.kirsten - 2012-04-01 10:32

People please! Look at the date. If this IS an April Fool's joke its a pretty irresponsible one though

      Johan - 2012-04-02 07:33

I doubt that N24 will use a real Minister as a April fool joke, especially as a racist joke.

  • Moegamat Adiel Hanslo - 2012-04-01 10:32

So there was witnesses on the flight who heard this yet the spokesperson try to turn the story around typical ANC behaviour

  • Michael - 2012-04-01 10:35

What is most unusual about this whole little saga is the fact that the "Minister" was travelling in economy in the first place? Our ruling "party" are like the constitution, "enshrined" in first class so why the downgrade? Who's been a naughty pie slotter then??

  • William - 2012-04-01 10:36

  • grant.hide - 2012-04-01 10:39

  • Crracker - 2012-04-01 10:41

Covering the whole inside of a plane by video recording (unobtrusively and only for events like the kind alleged in the article for later use as evidence) should be standard practice by now. The minister should be charged like any other citizen if she is indeed guilty of the alleged conduct. That is where a video recording would be invaluable.

  • Anne-Marie - 2012-04-01 10:42

Erm ... Why is the SAA spokesperson apologising for not upgrading her??? If she wants a business class seat, she should pay for it like everyone else. She is a disgrace. She probably assumed that the cabin crew would back down with fear when she mentioned race. These bullying tactics must be stopped.

  • WigzellRM - 2012-04-01 10:43

A bit bizarre for an April fool joke.

  • Shaun Robinson - 2012-04-01 10:43

Is the race card not getting a bit old now? That chip is getting soooo boring...

  • whoowhoohoo - 2012-04-01 10:43

Bullsh*t. Apart from the fact that she has not done a stitch of work that I know of, what makes her so important that she can demand to be upgraded ? We Afrikaners have a saying : "As krummel brood geword het dan rys hy oor die pan !

Cost of business class ticket to new York r51,000, cost per person per night in ritz Carlton new York r5500, cost of whole trip to the south African taxpayer r6.8 million, being to fat and lazy to get your lardarse out of bed to attend most of the meetings......
