Minister's plea to road users after crash

2013-07-01 16:50

Johannesburg - Transport Minister Ben Martin has lamented the death of 15 people in an accident in Sandfontein in North West, an official said on Monday.

"The minister sends his heartfelt and sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes those injured a speedy recovery," said spokesperson Tiyani Rikhotso.

"He has called on every road user to take personal responsibility in road safety and ensure that South African roads are not turned into killing fields."

The accident happened on Sunday afternoon on the R510 road at the Sandfontein village off-ramp.

Rikhotso said preliminary indications were that a light delivery vehicle turned into oncoming traffic and collided with a bus.

Those killed were passengers in the delivery vehicle, and 29 people injured in the crash were on the bus.

Rikhotso said Martins had urged the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) to speed up its investigation into the accident.

Why all these spokespeople? Why can't the minister speak for himself in these tragic situations- it would be far more comforting to the families. PS I said all this myself!

its time these spokes persons tell their minister to fix the roads and make officers more visible and tasked to do the jobs day n night s i think theres more than enough of them

I could not agree with you more. That road in particular needed upgrading years ago already. I sometimes think that a certain amount of people needs to die on a road before they upgrade it. In some provinces people pay to use a road with money, in the north west they pay with their lives.

How do you get 15 people into a bakkie?

      Charlotte-Francisque Roux - 2013-07-01 19:11

Einstein said, while even the vastness of the universe has its limitations, stupidity has none... So here is the answer to your question: you get 15 people into a bakkie with the application of a sufficient dose of stupidity, in fact should you apply sufficient stupidity, you will get 30 people into a bakkie. But that is only the start - apply vastly greater amounts of stupidity, than suggested above and you will make somebody that could not pass std-3 at school, the president of your country. But why stop there - apply an infinitely greater amount of stupidity and you will move into the realms of things call AMCU and EFF...

We've heard these pleas before - let's see action, and not words.
