Pretoria - The minister of justice and correctional services has undertaken to consider the parole applications of apartheid-era assassins Eugene de Kock and Ferdi Barnard.

In terms of a court agreement on Thursday morning, De Kock will find out on or before 19 December 2014 whether the National Council for Correctional Services will recommend him for parole. The minister will then have until 31 January 2015 to make a decision whether to place him on parole.

The same dates apply to Barnard.

"An agreement in this matter has been reached," Roelof du Plessis, SC for De Kock said. "Having read the papers and having heard counsel, the following order is made by agreement between the parties in light of the victim/offender dialogue which has taken place between the applicant and relatives of victims of the crimes committed by him."

In July, De Kock was denied parole, with Justice and Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha saying that the families of his victims had not been consulted.

Sapa reported that De Kock was in charge of a police "death squad" at Vlakplaas, outside Pretoria. He was arrested in 1994 and in 1996 was sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment for six murders, including the Nelspruit Five, and to a further 212 years' imprisonment on other charges.
