'Miracle' escape after kudu totals car

2012-02-28 11:00

Johannesburg - A Limpopo man says he is lucky to be alive after a kudu "fell from the sky" and landed on his bonnet.

Asi Ligege from Thohoyandou was travelling to Oudtshoorn on Saturday when he had a close shave with the animal.

The kudu passed through the windscreen of his Ford Focus and went out the back window. A part of the car’s roof was also torn off. The kudu died on impact.

Ligege said the safety belt and airbags saved his life.

“I had no opportunity at all to react.

“If my car had hit the kudu in a different way, I would surely have been dead.”

Knocked out

Ligege was rendered unconscious for a few moments after the accident, but was nevertheless able to bring his car safely to a stop on the other side of the road.

He sustained light injuries.

There were no passengers in the car.

Dave D’Aguiar was one of the first people on the scene. He was travelling from Knysna to Cape Town.

“It felt like I had come across a miracle,” he said.

“He [Ligege] was amazingly calm on the scene.

“He will probably never look at kudu biltong the same way,” joked D’Aguiar.

WTF? "fell from the sky", where was dis?...LoL

      David - 2012-02-28 11:20

The Gods must be crazy - this tim with a Kudu rather than a Coke bottle. LOL

      skat.peete - 2012-02-28 11:25

@dlawre30...they must go bury that Kudu at de end of the world, like that coke bottle :)

      Paul - 2012-02-28 12:15

Kudus try to jump over moving vehicles and unfortunately get their timing wrong sometimes. You need to be on the lookout for them in rural areas and drive slowly especially at dusk and after sunset.

      Schmee - 2012-02-28 12:38

Kudu's jump amazingly high. Two meter fences don't keep them in so I can imagine that it kudu've seemed to come out of nowhere. Fell from the sky is a bit of a stretch though. On the other hand, it is from Limpopo and lately it seems there are pretty weird people there. Maybe they are all smoking something.

  • Peter-Peter - 2012-02-28 11:24

out the back window? glass fitters must work really fast then

      Bardy - 2012-02-28 11:55

The Kudu probably knocked the boot open and went through. Poor journalism!

      Wt - 2012-02-28 12:20

      cameronjohnprice - 2012-02-28 12:51

Good one - did not notice it untill you mentioned it.

      Neil - 2012-02-28 12:53

Yup, poor journalism. Back window is clearly undamaged. Also a kudu is big, not big enough to fit in a car!

      Monique - 2012-02-28 13:07

      LOL!!! WT you're funny.

      shaficks - 2012-02-28 14:12

      Leon - 2012-02-28 14:19

@ Neil - I have the rest of the photos. this one doesn't do justice. The kudu isnt very big. it's female. and it ripped the boot apart!

      Peter - 2012-02-28 16:14

Probably the impact opened the back door.

      John - 2012-02-28 19:42

@ Peter. Correct. There were a series of pics, I think they may be on the Capetalk website... The kudu went through the car, and the impact burst the back hatch open.

  • jimmy.horne - 2012-02-28 11:26

back window in one peace.but the kudu went threw it?

      Ally - 2012-02-28 14:27

      Pity about the spelling ... peace/piece through/threw ... use it/don't use it/ whatever

      Rudie - 2012-02-29 09:36

Ag Ally , jou ou poephol.

  • Mondli - 2012-02-28 11:27

    Thank God he made it.

      Godfrey - 2012-02-28 14:25

If god had anything to do with it he would not have allowed the accident to happen in the first place. Is that complicated?

      John - 2012-02-28 19:44

Godfrey on the roll again. Talk about religious fanaticism...

      Andre - 2012-02-29 08:44

Godfrey you take the frey away, and you think you God,lost soul!

  • Thoka - 2012-02-28 11:27

My brother get a bakkie. Gods wanted to give you some meet.

      Peter - 2012-02-28 16:15

  • quentin.malga - 2012-02-28 11:28

"which went through his windscreen and out of the back window" The back window is still in tact??

      Wt - 2012-02-28 11:35

      another miracle perhaps?

  • Wt - 2012-02-28 11:36

      Peter - 2012-02-28 16:16

Not sure about that, the kudu is dead - probably not very nice looking corpse either? 0 - 0 I'd say.

  • Darren - 2012-02-28 11:38

Suicide bokke? Next it'll be our markets and post offices.

  • Riaan - 2012-02-28 11:41

please post tyhem pic, evem if its on faceboook

  • Shirley - 2012-02-28 12:15

    Poor kudu!

  • Napolita - 2012-02-28 12:20

"fell from the sky"?? I think Lourensa Eckard from Beeld MAY be taking the story too far. I would not be surprised that he guy said something to the effect that the Kudu appeared from nowhere he could have noticed it, almost like falling off the sky. But then again, I could be very wrong.

      John - 2012-02-28 19:48

Yes you are wrong... she was quoting the driver....

  • Erlo - 2012-02-28 12:31

This seems to happen already on the 18th of Feb. News24 is 10 days late with their reporting.

  • Sinjoku - 2012-02-28 12:31

uhmm the back window is intact in the picture -_-

  • PatPion - 2012-02-28 12:33

Wow, he's lucky a part of the kudu didn't hit him in the car! Complements to Ford for the safe car!

      Melusi Myaluza - 2012-02-28 12:46

what safe car? the guys nearly dies and u congratulate ford? for what exactly?

  • Evon - 2012-02-28 12:34

    Speed Kills.

      stefan.vanderspuy - 2012-02-28 12:44

Yeah, the kudu shouldn't have been running so fast...

  • Melusi Myaluza - 2012-02-28 12:43

and u wonder why sane people don't drive a ford focus!

      David - 2012-02-28 13:20

You are obviously not sane. This story is about a Kudu hitting a car - what is your problem??? Ford is an excellent car, there is no such thing as a bad car in todays world, the competition between the manufacturers is too great. You have a problem.

      Melusi Myaluza - 2012-02-28 13:42

@David, u really need to chill, relax, and love your ford focus

      John - 2012-02-28 19:50

He came out the car alive and unscathed...

  • victor.kaumba - 2012-02-28 13:52

  • marnusmnorval - 2012-02-28 14:14

Poor car?? POOR KUDU.. hehe kidding im glad his alive

  • Leon - 2012-02-28 14:16

I just receive an email about this! this is Crazy! the guy only has a scratch on his hand but his car is completely totalled. The car is completely covered in Sh@t and the kudu went streight through the car and exited at the boot where it left it last meal. the photo's are unbelievable!

  • Cynthia - 2012-02-28 14:21

I'm very glad that you were not injured or killed. Sad for the Kudu. skat.peete I don't think it is a lughing matter.

      Peter - 2012-02-28 16:20

Thumbs downs only?? Sometimes I wonder ...

  • Trudy - 2012-02-28 14:22

This is weird. Firstly, kudus are massive, no way it could fit into a Ford Focus never mind fly THROUGH the car. Which brings me to my second point. How fast was the car and the kudu travelling for the animal to go right through the car?? Oh, and where's the kudu? Wouldn't there be more blood if it hit the car with that amount of force? Strange story.

      StarStruck - 2012-02-28 14:37

Adolescent Kudu's are not so big. The car could have done 80km/h and the Kudu 60km/h that makes for a high powered impact if you ask me.

  • Cynthia - 2012-02-28 14:23

VVt - your stupid joke is in very poor taste!

  • Grimmister - 2012-02-28 14:27

  • braddo.ct - 2012-02-29 07:25

This actually happened the Saturday before last, not Sat. I remember meeting Mr. D’Aguiar on the road between Tradouw Pass and Montagu, and he had just come from seeing the kudu incident.
