Cape Town - The wait is over for the family and friends of a South African man who went missing in the Bahamas at the start of the month, with news emerging on Wednesday that he died of natural causes while there.

According to a post on the "Find Shaun Beukes" Facebook page, set up by concerned family and friends, 34-year-old Beukes died on Sunday May 3.

He was last seen in the Grand Bahama island area and at a beach resort in Orlando, Florida, in the United States, in that same period.

“They did a post-mortem and there was no external bodily trauma to suggest foul play. We believe he suffered from asthma and had phoned police, after saving the number on his phone, to say he is standing there and that he cannot breathe,” family representative, Greg Wells-Clifton, told News24 on Wednesday.

“They sent someone immediately and when they got there, he was on the ground and he had an asthma pump with him.”

His disappearance was reported to the Norwood police station a few weeks ago and a poster detailing his looks and disappearance was widely circulated on social media, with people offering their assistance and opinions on what might have happened to him.

Beukes leaves behind his parents and two sisters.
