Johannesburg - Thirty-three children have been reunited with their parents after getting lost on Western Cape beaches on New Year's day, police said on Friday.

"A total of 34 children were handed over to the SA Police Service in the province. Only one girl has yet to be reunited with her parents," Captain FC Van Wyk said.

The 3-year-old girl was found at Muizenberg beach on Thursday.

"She is currently kept at a safe house. At the time she was discovered, she only had her underwear on."

City of Cape Town officials said at least 500 children got lost on Cape Town's beaches on New Year's Day. Mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith said all but 70 of them were reunited with their families.

The children were separated from their parents on Monwabisi, Strandfontein, Muizenberg, and Strand beaches.
