George - The 3-year old lion which escaped from the Karoo National Park has been spotted about 20km from home, SANParks said on Monday.

"We are still tracking the lion," spokesperson Reynold Thakhuli told News24.

"At least he's coming back now towards the park so we quite happy and quite hopeful that he will probably get himself back into the park."

The lion was believed to have escaped on June 5 through a hole under the perimeter fence of the park.

The Karoo is a hilly region of grassy scrubland and winding dry river valleys, making tracking a challenge.

"The terrain is pretty rough. It is quite mountainous so it's really, really difficult to work in that terrain," Thakhuli said.

SANParks was still being assisted by a master tracker from Botswana.

Trackers headed out every morning on foot at around 04:00 and returned at 21:00.

"It's a full day of tracking. They are tracking on foot with a helicopter on standby in case it happens and they need to dart it [the lion] from the helicopter."

Thakhuli said the lion was at some stage about 150km away from the Karoo National Park near the town of Fraserburg.

Since it has been missing, 24 sheep and a kudu have been killed.

"That's how he survives," Thakhuli explained.

Once the lion has captured it will be put into a boma and they will "try and look into its behaviour", he said.
