Johannesburg - Twelve people were arrested in Moloto on Tuesday morning for beating a woman suspected of practising witchcraft, Mpumalanga police said.

The 12, aged between 18 and 46, were to appear in the KwaMhlanga Magistrate's Court at 15:00, said Captain Leonard Hlathi.

The 62-year-old woman was asleep in her home on Monday night when she heard knocking at her door, he said, adding: "She opened and the mob pulled her outside and began beating her."

Hlathi said they locked her inside a rondavel and were deciding whether to burn her or talk to her.

"While they were arguing, the woman managed to escape," he said.

Her home was later burnt down.

She alerted authorities and was treated for her injuries.

I can’t believe that the mob were trying to decide whether either to burn her or talk to her. I mean, two completely different actions!

I am confused. Is this not a cultural thing? I mean like polygamy, girl abduction, muti killings and such? Who are these agents beating up this poor woman?

To all South Africans & foreigners alike who just cannot contemplate how Boss Robert or Inkwekwe Julie-Ass gets any votes (NO, they are NOT rigging any elections!)... here is your answer! Just read the article & "phetsula's" comment. How do you deal with a problem when all common sense & rational thinking does not exist????????????? - 2011-02-01 20:29

The same way you deal with any vermin...

@Phetshula-Well..If you were a Christian then you'd believe that no amount of withcraft would 'overcome' you. So..if you believe in witchcraft, why not believe in God then you don't need to resort to violence.Either way, this is a sick report, even if the woman was/is a witch.

    stupidity, idiocy, narrow-minded a%%holes!

lol... ah, Africa. If you consider all the idiocy that happens in this country you really have to admit that Apartheid was inevitable. I mean after struggling for 100+ years to gain independence from Britain the white Afrikaners were never going to just have a fully fledged democracy in equal share with people like this. And if this idiocy is so rife today, imagine what it was like 80 years ago.
