Johannesburg - North West Premier Thandi Modise has ordered that alternative accommodation be found for thousands of people facing eviction from a Klerksdorp informal settlement, her office said on Thursday.

This, after the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria granted an application by civil rights group AfriForum on Friday for the eviction of squatters from the Meiringspark informal settlement.

The province respected the court's order that the Matlosana municipality provide the squatters with alternative accommodation within 21 days, Modise said in a statement.

The search would be co-ordinated by the North West local government and traditional affairs department.

However, Modise said the department would continue to help the municipality to try and find an amicable solution to avoid the evictions.

It would be repulsive for the squatters to be thrown out onto the streets in the year the country commemorated the 100th anniversary of the 1913 Native Land Act, she said.

If the evictions went ahead, they would undermine progress in restoring homeless people's dignity.
