Modise to meet police over farm animals - report

2014-11-02 14:47

Johannesburg - NCOP chair Thandi Modise on Sunday declined to discuss a report that she would meet police to discuss the discovery of dead and starving animals on her North West farm earlier this year.

"I don't want to comment," Modise said when asked about the Sunday Times reporting that a meeting with police had been scheduled for next week.

The newspaper quoted North West police spokesperson Brigadier Thulani Ngubane as saying the National Council of Provinces chairperson had been "co-operating with us from day one".

He said a meeting planned for July had been postponed, but that police understood "the nature of her work and business".

Over 100 dead animals

In July this year, police and NSPCA inspectors found more than 100 dead animals, including sheep, geese, goats and ducks, on her farm. It appeared they had been without food or water for over a week.

About 85 pigs, who were still alive, had begun cannibalising 58 dead pigs, and were reportedly drinking their own urine. Many others found alive had to be put down.

There were no farmworkers on the property, no electricity, and the water pumps were broken.

On Sunday, Ngubane said while police were still awaiting Modise's version of events, others involved in the matter had already been providing statements. Modise had reportedly told police she would travel to Potchefstroom to meet them.

The National Prosecuting Authority told the Sunday Times it had not received a docket, indicating whether Modise would be prosecuted.

Conditions improved

On Friday the NSPCA said conditions on the farm had improved.

"Cattle on the farm have been supplied with sufficient food and appear to be in an acceptable condition," spokesperson Grace de Lange said in a statement.

She said farm managers were implementing advice from vets on how to run the farm.

LOOK: "Whites" should boycott the rest of the majority here. Support "white"-owned companies, buy your fuel from SASOL where possible. If you need waiters for your restaurants, petrol station attendants etc. employ "white" students or casuals. Go MTN if you can, try and get off the Escom grid if possible... we are going to need to stick together if we are going to make it. Also start working toward paying tax to an alternative and starve the government out... Things are escalating fast and are going to get real ugly ugly real quickly.

What type of managers are now employed that need advice to look after live stock? Must really been at he bottom of the barrel in their classes. On the other hand. You dont need to know 70% of the accepted work load to pass an exam in SA. Thats probably the reason why the managers need help to know that you have to feed farm animals at least twice a day

  • Dawie Barnard - 2014-11-02 16:53

@ Isaac Ncgobo Just because a thought exists in your racist mind, does not make it the truth. This new trend of black commentators to write down thumbsuck to serve their own little racist agendas is repulsive and pathetic. Why are you all so scared of Helen Zille that you have to stoop down to insulting her at every turn?
